Hi guys,

I was talking with a colleague today in Vienna and saying how when I was there and needed to eat cheap, I went to Mozart Strube (near the trainstation and the Wombat Base hostel) and had Wienerschnitzel and fries for 5 euros.

So what are your favorite places to eat, where is it (city and landmark), and how much does it set you back?

Amsterdam: any frites stand... approx. €2
Barcelona: Safra 18 - approx. €20 incl. wine
Brisbane: Food Cafe (casual Japanese) - approx. $6
Brussels: Chez Léon - approx. €18
Cairns: China Cafe (best Chinese in Oz) - approx. $5
Costa del Sol: any chiringito (beachside seafood hut) - approx. €4
Dublin: anywhere with chips & cheese - approx. €3
Las Vegas: Prime Steakhouse, Bellagio - approx. $90
London: Redan Pub, Bayswater - £7 for two meals
Los Angeles: Subbies Roll-Inn (sandwiches) - exactly $1.75
Manchester: Sam's Chop House - approx £25
New York City: Jules Bistro, East Village - approx. $50 incl. wine
Paris: L'entrecôte (Les Halles location) - prix fixe steak lunch €8
Prague: U Radnice - approx. 200Kc incl. beers
Queenstown: Fergburger - approx. $8
San Francisco: Happy Garden dim sum - approx. $7
Sydney: Pie Face (King's Cross)... approx. $2.50

We did our level best to visit every restaurant in Vilnius, but eventually gravitated to a few favourites.

"Traditional Lithuanian" - Cili Kaimas, a chain but reliably good food and relatively cheap - you could eat a huge meal for under $8. Our favourite was just off Gedimino Prospektas.

Salads and Sunday brunch - Mano Guru, near intersection of Vilniaus and Labdariu gatves. Meal sized salads, about 15 to 20 Lt (around $5 - 8), pancakes, kose (warm cereal, yummy) maybe 8 - 12 Lt. Restaurant is non-smoking and doesn't serve alcohol, so closes around 8 pm, but is open for breakfast every day.

Pizza: Cili Pica (pronounced Chili Pizza) is a chain run by a Lithuanian American so it's one of the few places that actually serves something approximating traditional pizza, though there are still always two bottles of ketchup (regular and Mexican) on the table. A cheese pizza for one (about 20 cm) costs a little over a dollar.
Kukabura, an "Australian" restaurant, also serves decent pizzas for about a buck. It's in the basement of a store in Gedimino Pr.
ZaZa's is the hip place to hang out, you'll see models and politicians there in the evenings, and can get a pizza for about $2. It's on Vilniaus g. near the intersection with Gedimino Pr.

Chinese: I don't recommend this in Vilnius unless you're desperate for the taste - they freely substitute traditional Chinese ingredients with whatever's available locally. "No bok choy? Okay then, cucumber." And it tends to be more expensive than other options, but would suggest Rytu Perlas in Labdariu g. $10 +/-

Indian: Sue's. Just off Gedimino Pr, with a view of Cathedral square. De-lish, and have items ranging from mild to nuclear. Pricey compared with other options, but great atmosphere and food. $15 +.

Fusion: G-Lounge. Unique atmosphere in Vilnius, tres hip but they let us in anyway. The food was superb when we started going there, but the changed the menu close to when we left, took out some of our favourites. Lots of Asian influenced flavours. Wasabi mashed potatoes and sweet mashed potatoes were awesome sides, if they have the seared tuna, get it, and my husband and I still crave the chocolate ganache cake. Fancy anniversary dinner for two with dessert and wine was $35. Pilimo g. - you'll see the sign and then go down a small alley and upstairs.

Breakfast: Prie Angelo, Uzupis. Across the river from Vilnius, near the angel statue (that's what the name means). Delicious caramel crepes, if that's your sort of thing. $5 ish.

When traveling, any steet stand is good for me, I could live on Frittes and Pancakes in Holland though!!!

In the US I could live just with Taco Bell. I swear!!

Joe - Pieface is a nice little Aussie meat pie stand that's dirt cheap and goooood.

Florencia - That's disgusting. But I found myself craving it when I was away last. *sigh*

Despite vowing that I would have a Taco Bell at least once when in America, I never did end up having one. Probably a good thing, I think!

Omi, we were going to have a Fergburger in Queestown, but then we ended up having something else, and I was really peed off we didn't get to have one!

Miami

Walking out on the street: trees-a topiary fairy tale. One way to the bay one right to the beach.
Sitting high on a bar stool looking out at Collins Ave. It's clear. The wraparound bar has three customers. I'm ordering a dinner with cuban coffee. There is a single lady eating dinner. The occasional customer comes in. One orders cigarettes and pays for two packs and leaves. Something on the menu takes 45 minutes to make. I order with the help of the waitress. A short dark skinned lady that is reluctant to make conversation After ten minutes she puts the plates in front of me. Warm cuban bread with butter. A large plate of yuca, onions, rice with black bean and large fried pork chunks. The grease on the bottom of the plate is very tasty.

There is a cuban restaurant called Puerto Sagua at 6th and Collins Miami Beach, FL. For a full course meal and a tip it set me back $25. I left full with half my meal to go and a dessert.

Sicily, near the train station in Isola delle Femmine was a cafe called "Maxim" Chocolate filled croissant. 1-2 euros
