I'll be finishing my internship in southern France July 13, and I orginally planned on flying out of Paris July 14 to Venice to begin my month of traveling. But I was wondering if I should stay in Paris for Bastille Day, thus losing a day in another city. I've already been to Paris, so I have no desire to see attractions. But if there are a lot of people and festivities, then I'll go for that. Has anyone gone? Is it a big celebration?

No bigger than Canada Day in Ottawa or Independence Day in DC! Yes, Bastille Day is the big one all over France, so it's well worth attending - Paris will be a huge celebration, but you'll find celebrations all over the country, so if you want to go somewhere else, there'll still be a party.

I'm thinking of checking this out this year. Does anyone know a good part of Paris to stay in for something like this?

You should probably stay in the 7th arrondisement or nearby, so you can walk back home from the Eiffel Tower later. I stayed at Hotel de L'Avre, so I dont know about hostels in the area but there should be some. Near La Motte-Picquet, Ecole Militaire, or Latour Maubourg metro stations....

Super fun to see those fireworks shoot up from the top of la tour eiffel as it sparkles...sigh, its a great memory, may have been better with someone special to share with.. it had potential to be a tres romantique experience...
