Anyone know any deep house/chillout/downtempo places to go in either London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome or A-dam?

They're EVERYWHERE.
Best thing to do is go to the library or the book store to check out the TimeOut guide for each city to see somewhat up-to-date listings... Otherwise, check local listings/flyers. Personal favorites... In London, I like the DJ bars for more chill/downtempo stuff, but there's deep house to be found at the big clubs as well, such as Turnmills, Fabric, etc. (Not every night is a trance night..) Check listings in TimeOut magazine, but make sure it's the one for that week. (A lot of news agents try to pawn off the old issues.) In Paris, there's l'Enfer in the southern part of the city (right about at the Tour de Montparnasse) which hosts a good deep house night sometimes.. The Queen (guess what kinda clientele it sports?) is well-known for deep/funky house. After-hours action can be found around the seedy Pigalle district, most notably at the Folies Pigalle - but don't even bother showing up 'til 2 or 3 in the morning at the earliest. Remember to dress the fuck up for Paris, or you probably won't get past the doorman. In Barcelona, two of the bigger clubs - La Paloma and Terazza - have plenty of house, though the covers are relatively steep for Spain. If you're there during the Sonar festival (happens sometime in the summer - do a Google serach) you'll be inundated with all sorts of great electronic music, from minimalist techno to chillout to experimentally-tinged house to local artists who tie it all together. The club scene's a bit weak, IMO, in Amsterdam, but there's a great chillout lounge at the Winston (just south of the RLD) that sometimes breaks out into a nutty party - mostly locals, which is coooool. Paradiso also hosts some club nights that would probably be up your alley. Enjoy! |
