Typically Sevilla, but plan on sleeping outside or crashing at a friend's house-- hostels and hotels are almost guaranteed to be overbooked just about anywhere in Andalucia during Semana Santa. It's a big deal. (I know this to be true, having accidentally landed in Spain in the middle of this and having a DEVIL of a time finding a place to stay in any town in Andalucia. Actually, we didn't-- we left. ) Oh, and expect to share the festivities with lots and lots of french and german tourists! Semana Santa is typically Europe's school holidays. And Europeans LOVE to vacation in Spain. Welcome to the boards!!!!!

We spent Semana Santa last year in Rota Spain. It's right on the Atlantic coast. It's a small town near Jerez de la Frontera (a discount airline destination) and Cadiz. The processions are obviously smaller than in the big cities, but it might be easier to find digs... If you can't get something in Rota, check Jerez, Puerto de Santa Maria or Cadiz, all are near enough to commute. Rota has a small Old Town, and was the birthplace of Bartolomeo Perez who sailed with Columbus to the New World. And the Church of the Virgen de la O where the processions go, is something like 1000 years old. It's pretty cool. And Cadiz is a cool town, too. Might be a little chilly this year, last year we swam at Easter, but that was in late April, and it was only warm enough a couple of days.

We stayed with friends, so I can't suggest digs, although there are some small cheap hotels in the town.

Have fun wherever you go, it's a fabulous experience!
