Hello everyone. I plan on visiting a few cities and Berlin is one of them. I'd like to visit a few clubs and pubs but I don't know much about Berlin. Any recommendations? I enjoy Punk rock, Techno, alternative and traditional pubs.

yeah i went on the pub crawl with them as well when i was in berlin a couple of weeks ago. its really good and the people are really cool as well.

but we ended up in this crap club in the middle of nowhere - it was a tuesday night as well, so we were virtually the only ones in there!

Thats the only night i went out properly in berlin, so cant really help with the nightlife much!

well I've never been to europe but I must say I'm mystified by the good press the pub crawl gets on these pages. Besides a few free drinks you need someone to lead you around to a couple of bars?? You've got a pair of feet don't you? 1) Look down the street...I'm sure you'll see a couple of bars. 2) go to them, drink and meet people. 3) feel tremendous sense of accomplishment that you've built your own pub crawl. Raise arms and go "whoooh!"

I definitely reccommend doing the New Berlin free tour, ive heard nothing but good things about the pub crawl but it looks like I would get really fucking annoyed by the people by the end of the night. I dunno. The free tour of the city is wonderful though it is very informative. And free.

Masssss bars in Berlin though and its one of the cheaper of the major western europe cities. Jag is cheeeap. The street that the pub crawl starts on though has tons of bars. But one you NEED to check out Cafe Zapata. It is basically right across the street from where their pub crawl starts so find a flyer find the start of pub crawl, and walk across the street. Zapata is ill. It is in a building that a bunch of squatters took over a long time ago and turned the building into one containing a cafe and bar, a theater metal shops and other money making socialist run ventures. And i KNOW you like socialism Mr. Rousseau. So check out Zapata. The street starts with an O i doooo believe.

Adios

Kreuzberg is best for the punk/alt scene. There are two parts, but SO36 (named for the postal code...if you say it in German - S-O-sechs-und-dreizig - you'll earn muy street cred. It's like their CBGB's. Frank Black played there while I lived in the area, and there are tons of clubs/bars immediately next to one another, most with no covers unless you're there for a special event. There are also lots of laid back bars with outdoor seating (some even when it's chilly!) to just hang. Trinkteufel is a favorite. I think they have a website too!

Wish I had been able to see this earlier! Berlin ist supercool!

The pub crawl is class, they take you to a few different parts of the city, like you take a train for ten minutes. The nightclubs are really cool one was in this run down factory or something like that most of it was outdoors. The only problem was they dumbed us on the far side of Berlin and we didn't know how to get back.

Hey Ted! You're going to spend Sylvester in Berlin? I'm soooo jealous. Sigh, meine Lieblingsstadt!

If you have any level of German comprehension and/or a German to English dictionary, pick up a Zitty. If you have ever read a local weekly free city paper in the US, it's the same thing.

What are your main interests for going out or how you'd ideally like to spend NYE? I was kind of equal parts alt-scene-ish and backpacker-touristy while I was there. Not so much into a high class evening, if you know what I mean. So if I were there for NYE (which I missed, dammit!) I would probably go check out the craziness around any the monuments (what you think of when you think of Berlin - Golden Else/Victory Column, Fernsehturm, Gedaechtniskirche, Brandenburger Tor, Potsdamer Platz, though that's not really a monument, just supercool, I guess) and then party in Kreuzberg 36 either for midnight or for after. But BUNDLE UP! The Brandenburg Gate will be the BIG place to hang out. It's going to be a zoo, but just go to a Supermarkt, buy some 30-cent beers and stuff your pockets for the outdoor festivities.

And just so you know, the SO36 neighborhood is my answer to everything, so I'm biased!!

Eek! I cannot wait to read your stories!

PS - MeTurk, and anyone actually, if you're ballsy enough, just take any bus that looks like it's going in the right direction (yay compass!) and get off once you see another bus stop or it stops going in your best guess of the right direction. We did this ALL the time in Berlin because we weren't there nearly long enough to become pros about the bus routes for all of our late night destinations.

There is somethng about Berlin that keeps me from traveling there. But I may just do it and do a tour of Germany. Bavaria and the Black Forest is more my thing. But you can't beat a pub crawl in Gremany.

Awww, I meant if you ever go back. Haha. I'm a nerd! I didn't actually think you were stranded by a pub crawl in Berlin for eternity...awwwww...though, as places to be stranded go, I'd be game!!!

I’m going the way of the backpacker so fancy is out which means I’m looking for drunkin debauchery. So the monument thing might be a good time. Now about the cold weather what are we talking about here, around zero degrees Fahrenheit? Or does it get even colder than that, I was told a good fleece jacket and then a shell over that is all you need but that does not sound like enough to me, any ideas?

Ya, until you break your liver but Germany has an excellent health system so it's not to bad.

So I looked up the avg temps on Yahoo and I'm skeptical. It says average hi is 37ish (F) and average low is 30ish. Noooo way. I'm from Pennsylvania originally, so I'm not a cold wussy. Maybe I was just there during a cold winter, but I'm not sure now. I would say accessorize with things that you can move around. Gloves yes, cause those cold brewskies will numb your fingers. Scarf? You can always tie it to a bag or loosen it if it's ridiculous. I did a lot with layers because of the activity levels. I'm sure you'll be walking around a lot during and it will be a people fest with tons of body heat. Just take care of your extremities! I think long sleeves and a nice North Face/Patagonia/generic adventuring gear fleece should do it if you accessorize right. And take millions of pictures of your night so we can see!!!

Sing it, MeTurk!! I had a homeopathic remedy for strep throat there once (for some reason the year preceding my trip was plagued with throat infections at least once a month!) and haven't had it since! Plus, we all know Hunter S. regenerated his liver several times, so I'm optimistic for my post-bar-crawl-marooned-in-the-middle-of-Berlin experience!!
