I was wondering if bars and clubs in western europe are very expensive in general.
My friend went last year and told me that the cover charges were in average 11 USD, and drinks around 7 USD. please help me out on this one, am I too optimistic or is he the one that is wrong? thx

It varies just like it does here. Some places you'll pay upwards of $30 USD for cover and god knows how much it'll cost to drink... although I've seen martinis going for well over 10-15 USD before and I'm sure they could be even more than that elsewhere. Other places may not have a cover and you may pay less than $1 for a beer. *shrug*

Welcome to the boards!

Well in the UK you're looking at anywhere from £2 to £15 cover charge, then for a pint it could cost from £1.80 up to about £5, it all depends where you go, what night and what time you arrive at the club. The earlier you arrive the cheaper it is to get in, and friday/saturday nights are usually slightly more expensive. Obviously London and other big cities are towards the top end of the price range, while clubs in smaller towns are much cheaper.

i have no idea about the clubs/drinks and whatnot, but have you tried booking hostels through Tpunk? itso n the front page if youve missed it. And there's a FAQ under that if you meant you're having problems WITH the hostel search...

If you keep getting problems, feel free to ask.

Most i ever paid for a drink in EU was $12USD for a pint, but that was in Nice, France, which is rediculously expensive compared to most places in Europe. Like SV said, it varies greatly from place to place.

The best way to experience clubs in Europe is to go on an organised pub crawl with the hostel you are staying with. It usually costs around $15 - $20USD and you get a few free drinks and shots with that and a "group leader" (ie. Irish pisshead) who gets pissed with you and takes you to the best places. It's a wicked night out with a heap of people from your hostel, can't go wrong. But, the $15 does not cover any drinks other than the ones your group leader gives you.

I loved how cheap the drinks were in Barcelona - providing you didn't hit up the tourist traps near the Ramblas or the waterfront... You could get a very tall glass of spirits for 2€!

Berlin has a great pub crawl orginized by Aussies, free vodka shots inbetween pubs promotions in all the pubs and free into the nightclub. It was €10 to go on it.

My advice...

Don't go to pub crawls in Rome...especially the "best of Rome" pub crawls, cuz you'll just end up partying with a bunch of fraternity-like American males all night. WHich is not something I go to Rome to do.

The best thing to do, is to talk to a local young person, and ask them where's a place they play ____ type of music, where locals go.

Stay away from tourist clubs! In Barcelona I went to one club where they played the entire Black Eyed Peas CD! OMG! I was gonna kill the DJ!

YES! I remember that place. I think it was called Espitit Chupitos...or something like that.... it was 1 Euro / shot, and there was this huge blackboard with like 500 shots written on it.

The best one was the "vaporizer", though

Ah, yes, the shot bar as everyone calls it - I think it's up Passeig de Gracia, in the sorta yuppie-ish part of town.

Yes the shot bar in Barcelona is awesome if you can get in. They the girls in our group in but no guys - thats not how its supposed to work, if youre with a girl, youre supposed to be able to get in! On down from the shot bar along the beach there is a strip of small clubs where you can get ample free drinks, not a real classy experience but the place to go to get free drinks.

IF you go to Barcelona, drinks are pretty cheap. You can find a decent beer for 1 or 2 euros.
