NYC March 08
Trying to figure out where to go for Spring Break. Will be with my mom, however she's a good traveler and is up for anything
Where should be go? I'm looking for culture, which is what the city is booming with. I wouldn't mind finding the places where there aren't as many tourists.
Just give me some tips, going to be there for 5 or 6 days. Thanks to Skybus, we're starting to get "Ryan Air" priced flights.

Where are you coming from? That will help us try to figure out a destination!
New York is so much fun, full of culture and plenty of things to do and see. Your pocketbook will take a whacking though. It's expensive to eat, sleep, get around and basically do anything in NY!

What's your budget? Does traveling with your mom mean you have a bit more to spend? This can make a big difference, for example you can get rush tickets to broadway shows for cheap but it takes some time investment to get them.

One money saver is Central Park - though it will be chilly when you're there. There are so many famous things (think Bethesda fountain, Strawberry Fields) and AMAZING opportunities for picture taking and nice walks.
Hotels have gotten ridiculous. So bad, that my dad who used to spring for a nice hotel and invite my mom along (his company paid for so much of his expenses) on business trips, stayed on Long Island last time he had to go for work. Prices have changed a ton in the last year...for the worst. You'll spend most of your money just trying to find a place to stay. Learn the subway, don't stay near Times Square, for God's sake!
We got standing room tickets to the Met for an opera when we went (Tosca, I think around $10-15 - can't remember). If you have options, plan for a weekend when something is going on (festival, whatever). Check out the Village Voice for events.

I'm coming from Indiana, flying out of Columbus Ohio via Skybus...
Actually got the hostel booked. Found this "Budget Hotel" place called West End Studios. The location is amazing, though I've heard some bad things. Regardless it was only 60 bucks total a night, and is just south of Columbia University.
I will have more money to spend because of this. Do include the expensive and the cheap by all means.

Seems like you're flying into Stewart if you're flying Skybus.
Unless you're renting a car, you'll have to somehow get to the either the Salisbury Mills railway station or the Breakneck Ridge station. From there, you need to take Metro North down to New York City. Once you get into NYC, public transit (I prefer the subways) can take you anywhere you need to go.

May I ask why you think the location is so good? Columbia is in Morningside Heights/Spanish Harlem and while it is undergoing another renaissance of sorts, its somewhat far from the downtown/midtown areas. Are you preferring to stay that far uptown?

Eh, it really doesn't matter to me because I am probably going to get a week subway pass. The distance is not a big deal. The price was right, I could not find another twin bed private anywhere for $60... And its with my mom so I really don't expect her to want to stay in a 4-10 person dorm, though it wouldn't bother me.

You seem to know a bit about the area? How safe is the area? Anything close (other than CPark and Colombia?)
