Vienna or Salzburg??
Well.. I've got my itinerary pretty worked out... and I know what you guys think: "dont plan too much!". Unfortunately I don't have the money nor the time to just go where I feel like on the spur of the moment (although I'd love to)... but rather have a somewhat laid out schedule. So, due to lack of time, I'm forced to choose between Vienna or Salzburg... what do you guys think? I've been looking more into Salzburg, but I was talking to my Dad today and he told me that going to going to Austria and only going to Salzburg would be like going to Paris and visiting Lyon instead of Paris; that I should at least get to know a country from it's capital city From there I'd be going onto Prague, and the itinerary is pretty much the same. So now I just have to choose... but where do I go??
I wanna hear your suggestions!

As I only went to vienna, i don't really think I'm that much help...but I loved Vienna. Of course I've always kind of romanticised about it, so maybe I'm a little biased?
The castle's gorgeous...opera house, well it's the opera house in vienna need I say more? And the shopping was really good too...ok there were a couple amazing stores out of a ton...but those couple stores made up for it! I have some v.cute skirts from vienna if I do say so myself. Sure some of vienna is WAAAAAAY over touristed in crap but as a whole, a lovely city. Where else in the world will you hear a beggar singing opera? (and be damn good at it too)

I agree with your father. There is more to see in Vienna. Schonbrunn, the Opera, the Minoritekirchen (This church has something interesting in it that will puzzle people who have been to Milan) etc. Salzburg has great scenery, Mozart's Geburthaus, etc.
Flo, since you are going to be in Dublin at some point on your trip, I thought I would add, that you can fly from Dublin to Salzburg for about 40 euros all told on Ryanair. The Vienna Salzburg train isn't that long of a ride despite the two cities being on opposite ends of the country.

Thanks Joe! I'll deffinitely look into that... because I was flying from Prague to Cork, and then Dublin-Paris (because I found a 3€ ticket). But I'll see what happens from Vienna to Cork.

To be honest, I wasn't that impressed with Vienna, but I seem to be the only one. Maybe it was the part I was in, but it felt very modern and big-city like when I was expecting something much older. I didn't get to see Salzburg, but I've been told the scenery there is much better.
Btw, don't forget to check aerlingus.com for Irish flights. Oftentimes will be cheaper than Ryanair.

I have found a small B&B in Salzburg that looks perfect. I am planning this to be the middle leg of the trip. I want to stop and catch myself for a few, quit days before I finish my trip. It looks like a smaller place, but that is what I want.

No, it's a time matter... that's why I have to choose. My dad says do both... but I hardly think 3 days is enough to do both cities

I agree with you, I too like to take my time rather than rushing to see everything and get that feeling of having seen nothing afterwards.

I sort of agree with that. Vienna has nice things to see but it isn't a city I would pick for just roaming around in. Salzburg is much nicer for that (but considerably smaller (...at least the old town is much smaller). All that said, Schonbrunn is pretty spectacular (they hold concerts there that are well worth the money ~40 euros)

Good point and if anyone is flying from Dublin to London (or vice versa) Aerlingus is definitely the way to go since they fly to Heathrow (which is on the Piccadilly line)

Salzburg had some cool shopping, castle, and the ICE CAVE was worth it. The ice cave tour, though 40 euro or so, made the stop in Salzburg for me. If you go, do it instead of the sound of music tour.

Lived There
I lived in Austria for about a half a year. I was 20 minutes outside of Vienna so I spent a lot of time there but I visited Salzburg a few times. My personal opinion is that Vienna would be the better place to go to. There is definitely more to do and unless you are obsessed with "The Sound of Music" Salzburg will be interesting for 2 hours tops. Everything is really expensive in Salzburg as well because it is a HUGE tourist city. Vienna has more opportunities and better places to go when you cannot spend a lot of money.
If you end up going to Vienna stay at the Wombats Hostel (I think thats the name) and if you stay in Salzburg try the Yoho International Youth Hostel Salzburg. Both are nice clean places and, trust me on this one, a lot of fun!
If you want restaurant names or shops in Vienna just let me know, I can def tell you whats worth seeing.
