This place is great - the location is a little off the beaten path, but not hard to manage at all.
one thing to mention: it's certainly in the former eastern berlin...bleak surroundings - but it's no big deal, kind of cool actually.
the hostel itself is great, near a train station, rents bikes - very clean rooms and bathrooms, well, we did have a private...
it also had a little bar, a good looking breakfast, and my favorite - table tennis!

**now, i didn't stay at this place, but we went walking past it in our explorations, and it looked pretty good from the outside, a much better location than pegasus: circus hostel

Thanks for the heads up JOA, Berlin is high on my list of places I gotta go before I have to stop being a trav'la and start being father.....I will definatly keep this place in mind!!!

( Any chnace of a city play by play in the Western Europe section?)

hey cd - you can take baby with you, once he's old enough... assuming he's a he.
i bet your travelling days don't come to an end, even in fatherhood... at least i hope not!

city play by play? oh, i really would -- but we spent all of a day there.
being spoiled after munich, it was hard to find the right vibe in berlin.

i can say this:

1) berlin is huge! i really wished i had a local to guide me there. there's a certain bus line, maybe #200 (??) that naturally gives a nice tour of the city on it's route - of course i didn't do that, but heard it was nice.

2) you can skip the ka/de/we department store food floor - wtf?

overpriced food, kind of stunk - it wasn't all that, but they did have nice bathrooms!

3) try currywurst mit pommes! easily found on the street.

i didn't realize it, but i've even got back up on what a kick ass place pegasus is - good!

I've spent the past three weeks in Berlin (in an apartment though) and the bus routes that are referred to are 100 and 200. 100 takes you past the Schloß Bellevue (the president's house), numerous government buildings, Humboldt Universität, the Staatsoper, Bebelplatz, Unter den Linden, and all sorts of other landmarks. Its ends are at the Bahnhof Zoo and Alexanderplatz. The 200 goes from Bahnhof Zoo to Michelangelostraße (teeny stop in East Berlin). You see the Philharmonie, Kulturforum, Potsdamer Platz, the West Berlin branch of the Staatsbibliothek, Humboldt, Staatsoper, Unter den Linden, Rathaus, and a whole lot of residential areas.

If you want to go shopping, go to H&M (Swedish chain with fashionable but inexpensive clothes) or even just a normal department store like Wertheim. Department stores here are nothing like they are in North America... most of what KaDeWe has but smaller, not as upscale, and absolutely everywhere.

Food-wise I would recommend döner kebaps (lamb, fresh veggies, and garlic sauce inside grilled Turkish flatbread... the Quick döner at Adenauerplatz even has veggie patties instead of lamb if you're a vegetarian, but it's the only place I've seen with the vegetatian substitute) and rostwurst. If you're going grocery shopping, Lidl is far and away the cheapest chain. They have a lot of generic products. If you're going booze shopping I recommend food halls in department stores or bigger grocery stores like Meyer-Beck (half liters of beer cost around €0,50 without the pfand).

it's really great seeing the umlat throughout your post.

speaking of h&m (which i asssumed was german), i just went shopping at this second-handish store here in san diego and i bought a great dress for my trip... once i got home i recognized the long red rectangular tag in the dress, it matched the one in that black shirt i got in freiburg... looked at the back of the tag in the new dress - h&m! i thought it was really cool because i don't think we have any h&m's here in the states so that means someone bought it abroad and sold it to aforementioned store here in s.d. - small world, basically. haha! okay - welcome!
