Flying pig uptown. lots of fun, but not directly in a busy area. it's by the Leidplein area of town. gorgeous little park across the street. and a good bar in the basement, and there are sweet floor pillows to sit on, where smoking (the "other" kind of smoking) is allowed.

I've only ever been to the Flying pig (downtown I think, the one near the main street) it was good had a bar and was near the middle of town. I wanted to stay at the bulldog or dirty nellys this time around but they where booked out.

I'd go with the Wooden Shoe.
Hello, and welcome to Amsterdam's finest and most luxurious youth hostel.
We feature one medium sized room containing 70 beds which can sleep up to 375 bodies a night.
There is no bathroom. Nor is there one nearby. If you do not wish to have your valuables stolen I suggest destroying them or discarding them right now. You can also try hiding your valuables. In your anus. This will deter some but of course not all thieves.
Once you are inside, the doors are chained and locked from the outside. They will not be opened again until morning, no matter what. Should a fire occur due to our faulty wiring or, uh, the fireworks factory upstairs you will be incinerated along with the valuables that you have hidden in your anus.
Tips are greatly appreciated.

I thought the Flying Pig Uptown was cool. The location was close to Vondelpark and Leidensplein. It's kinda a hike from the main tram station though.

The Pension Hortus, blows all other places away. It may be a few euro more, but free breakfast, smoke friendly, free internet, and the owner is the coooooolest. I would reccomend the Hortus to any and all. Its a nice quite unknown secret just within walking district to everything.

Thats the one That place is indeed the bomb. You can smoke weed anywhere, the owner is so cool that he even cooks you fried eggs in the morning. We actually also enjoyed being so close to the Zoo. Great Zoo!!!!!!!! The rooms slept 2-6 maybe up to 8.

i just booked myself a night at the flying pig uptown in january and need to find a good spot for the nights of the 27th and 28th of december. i was looking at the park or lloyd but haven't read much feedback on either online.
anyone ever stayed at either? if not, does anyone know a good 1-3 star hotel with affordable single rooms?

Totally agree. Go bobs.
I'm staying in a nice, comfortable hotel this time though cause bobs is booked out...not on a shoe-string budget anymore ...... but would be good to meet more people...

i ened up booking two nights at the hotel di-ann. it's rated a 2star but looks pretty basic and was a great deal for location.

^ nah, but a buddy of mine says it's good fun but really commercial and often alot of stag parties. on the plus side, you'll won't have a problem finding some smoke.
