Reykjavik, Iceland - City Hostel Review
Where to begin? Flying into Iceland, it is very different from the get go. It does indeed feel like being on the moon. Landing at Kevalik airport, taking a 45-60 min. bus into Reykjavik. We chose to stop at the blue Lagoon on the way from the airport to the hostel. The same bus (flybus) will drop you off at the lagoon and pick you up and take you to the Hostel. The Blue Lagoon, fucking awesome and unlike anything else.

The place was amazingly active. Due to the extreme hotel prices, this hostel was full of Families, retired couples, you name it. We were in a 8 bed mixed dorm, $45 each for a bunkbed. Atleast since we booked it through hostelworld (sorry tony) we got a free buffet breakfast, and free linen. The hostel is HUGE, probably 50 dorm rooms on 3 levels. huge common room, very nice, 2 open use kitchens, and a 3rd kitchen the hostel cooked out of. There was a huge patio area with tons of cafe tables and picnic tables in the back overlooking the campground directly behind it. All in all a perfect hostel, as the sun was up 24hrs while we were there, and after a day out, there is a ton to do at the hostel. Our second day, we took a Viking horseback tour through the lava fields, and toured Reykjavik. We saw the city literally in 2 hours or so. Not very big, and only one real monument, but areas of the city were very pretty, and uniquely Icelandic. All in all we were happy we decided to take a 2 day layover, and would recommend it to all. Just expect the prices to higher than in London, and the need to do a different excursion everyday, to find something to do. Heres some more pics, and I collected an immense amount of info while there if anyone has questions. I did it. I threatened a free months ago and I just did it. I just booked a 3 night/4 day trip to Iceland. IcelandAir has a deal if you buy a roundtrip flight, you get 2 nights in a hotel free! I know i know, its going to be light out for for about 4.5 hours a day but whatever, we're going to Iceland!
my wife came up with the "Wreakin Havoc in Reykjavik" tour. t-shirts sold soon. we're going Nov 1st - 5th. |
Sweet man, you guys are going to have a blast. I have soooo much info. If you PM me your address, I will mail you some maps and tour/hostel brochures. Plus any other questions, feel free. You should also swipe an Iceland air blanket. We snatched 2 of them, and oh are they soft and sweet:)
