Checking out the FLying Pig in A-dam for June, Downtown is more expensive but the alternative site is 20 miles away...Any suggestions? How much is transportation into the city form the out of town site? thanks.

spend the extra if yopu have never been, TP swears by the Flying Pig, so its gotta be good...
20 miles away??? you would be best to look into getting a commuter train pass, that would save some dough, but might cost as much as the hostel would in the city by the time your done paying for everything. I would say the ticket one way for a 20 mile trip would be 8 - 10 Euro...easy...( its a guess based on train travel from several countries i have been to.)

I do swear by it, but have never actually slept there. I passed by it 10 times a day, to and from my hostel, and it was always going off!
Kylej's review is consistent from what I've found in the past, so most likely, it is a sure bet. But you don't have to stay there in order to hang out at their lounge.

I think I read somewhere that they have thier own transport between the beach hostel and the downtown one. I would prefer to stay in the downtiown one while there, is the beach in Holland really something owrth visiting?

I just got back from my europe trip last week, and I ended it off with Amsterdam. I stayed one night at the Flying Pig (downtown) and let me tell you, that place is happening 24/7.
It's really hard to get in though, but I know a guy who showed up early on the Sunday and managed to get a bed for a week. I showed up Monday morning and could only get a bed for one night. They still seemed to have a few beds for women left though, so it might be easier to get a place if you're female. They only take a limited number of bookings online, most of their places are reserved for people who show up on the day from what I understand.
The majority of the staff are other young travellers, so it's a really cool atmosphere for hanging out with whoever's around. Plus they have a "Happy Room" in the basement (for the *puff puff*) with a huge TV and a DVD player. The reception area has a bar and stuff. The rooms aren't anything special, but you don't exactly stay there for a good night's rest.
If you spend any time in Amsterdam, I suggest trying to stay there for at least one night, you won't regret it

The Pig downtown was quite cool - hell, even the bathroom in our six-person room was pretty decent, which goes contrary to what most people have to say about the place.
There are always people to hang out with, but if you're going to Amsterdam for culture, be warned that the place is packed wall-to-wall with Americans. As soon as I got to the Pig, I hardly thought I'd left home! Also, you have the drug tourists who never leave the place other than to go buy more weed.. Kinda sad, but hey, that's the 'Dam for ya. But there's plenty to do regardless. And the hard-boiled egg at breakfast gives you the protein you need to go all day
Overall, I recommend the place. Clean, funky, and as it's been said, always stuff going on with lots of people to meet. And the Irish bartender (I forget his name) is funny as fook! Take a basket of chips and a doob to the counter and make some new friends...

hello, thought i'd add my 2 cents. the flying pig downtown is pretty cool (i used to work there) but its over priced as hell and not that clean trust me. if you want a centrally located hostel in amsterdam that has a pretty cool atmostphere and is half the price go to bobs hostel its a street over. also there is a bus that runs on busy seasons for free from the downtown hostel to the one on the beach. the beach is really pretty but was empty in september. its supposed to be really good in august though. and its not very hard to get a job at any of the pig hostels.

I am so glad that I made my reservation for the pig early. I will give updates when I get back. Apparently is it there 10 year anniversary and the thirsty thursday is wonderful, although thirsty thursday sounds so american. We'll see.

I'm glad I reserved early as well, there are no beds left online for the days I'm travelling. Wow, the internet must be very popular.

Downtown all the way!! Its really close to centraal station (which is where all the trams run from and its a clean place with great partying and atmosphere. Very laid back. Tons of cool people. I swear by it as well.

I'm glad people are saying good things about the downtown! It'll be my first time in Amsterdam and I doubt anything called "Sleeping" will be done. :D

i've stayed both at pig palace and downtown, and both are pretty amazing.
palace seemed more chilled out though and i actually had more fun because i met cooler people and it's in a good area around leidseplein, with good shopping and the waterlooplein flea markets....

These places are never clean, as long as it looks fairly clean who's going to know.
I'll have to check out bobs the pig sounds like it might be overcrowded.
