so i'm heading to amsterdam. im sure lots of other poeple have thought about this too. but im debating about trying some shrooms while im there. i'm not a big pot head but i smoke occassionally so besides the fact that the weed in amsterdam is killer good and its fun cause its legal its not like a super awesome thrill.

but im debating trying some shrooms while im there. i've never tried them before but figure if i'm going to do it amsterdam is a good place simply because its regulated so i know what im getting and i can talk to the people at hte shop about what i'm getting. i was wondering if anyone else has tried shrooms in amsterdam and how they were. or if anyone tried shrooms there for the first time.

any suggestions positive or negative are appreciated. thanks.

okay...so...you've never done them before...Amsterdams shrooms are going to be fucking incredible...but thats not always good especially when u have no real idea what it is like...im sure people have told u all about it, but words dont convey it...are you going to be by urself? if not has the person or people ull be with, have they done them before? this is a really iffy topic...

RootBrewskies 04-24-2006 07:22 PM

i wont be by myself, but my partner in crime hasnt done them either. i know they will be pretty intense, but i'd probably just want some type of beginner stuff, although im sure beginner stuff there is better than alot of 'good' stuff here.

anyway, i want to try it but i dont want to have a terrible experience and i wasnt sure what the first time is like.

noke_travel 04-24-2006 07:25 PM

for a less intense experience, try buying wet ones as opposed to the dried ones. also, i wouldn't exactly say weed is legal over there...

RootBrewskies 04-24-2006 07:31 PM

well tolerated and legal are essentially the same thing. its the same deal in spain, i smoked alot in some bars in spain and its 'tolerated' there too. but in amsterdam they are really lax about the whole scene so it is about as close to legal as you can get.

and even though its not officially legal if your getting it at a legit shop its at least regulated so u know the quality of the product your getting. unlike the crap you buy off the street, they could be half pencil shavings or laced with some garbage that crack heads wouldnt touch.

bellelass 04-24-2006 08:13 PM

I every now and then I run across an article that talks about how much it pisses off the locals that all these kids run wild in their city, smoking weed and worse. Its more or less tolerated, but try to be cool.
As for doing shrooms for the first time in a foreign country- talk to the people in the shop quite a bit. Be with someone else who is doing them too, hopefully not their first time. Also, its best to try to do it in a place you feel comfortable. I wouldnt reccomend just wandering around, it could be quite terrifying. Really I wouldnt reccomend that you do it the way you're planning to do it, but you're an adult so you'll do what you want. Also bear in mind you will probably be a little floaty the next day, so plan accordingly.

bellelass 04-24-2006 08:15 PM

and if in doubt take the lesser dosage. Its better to be just a little weird and introspective and interested in everything than to take too much and freak out. If you do take a little too much, just try to tell yourself that its all in your head, and that it will pass. Thats the best advice Ive ever gotten in my life, and it can be applied to anything.

TERI 04-24-2006 09:06 PM

You can buy shrooms at the store in Amsterdam???? :lookaround:

Joker 04-24-2006 09:24 PM

Dude, seriously bad idea to use anything hallucinegenic in a foreign area, around people you don't know and in a place you're not familiar with. I am the voice of experience of sorts. :blink2:

Stick with the ganj. Don't try to show how big your balls are by hanging with the big dogs. Seriously, not a wise decision.

Since both of you have never done it before I would say it is a bad idea. I personally have never done drugs in another country, however I have done shrooms a few times in the states and i would say that doing it (especially for the first time) in a familiar place is very recommended. You will experience things you can't even begin to explain, and if you've never done it before and don't have someone who has to guide you, then your experience could turn into a bad trip.

My advice is either try it out before you leave or just don't do it. If you really want to try it there try your best to find a "guide" to help you through the trip... all of that said, it can be a very awesome experience

Wait! don't get down hearted! i did mushrooms for the first time when i was in amsterdam!! it was seriously a good time! it was the first time for my traveling buddy too. we met up with another one of my friends who was traveling around europe as well, and he had done them a couple times before. but really, you can buy them at smart shops all over the city! they're fresh too, so very different than what you're used to seeing in the US.

but yeah, it wasn't bad at all. just make sure you're with someone and get the lowest level shrooms, usually called "mexican" mushrooms. i suggest eating them on the street inconspicuously or in your dorm, not in the coffee shops, they dont like it there. but then you have about half an hour to get your ass somewhere where you want to hang out for a few hours. We choose a nice coffee shop, stayed talkative, had some tea, smoked a joint or two, and it was really one of the best experiences i've had involving substances, which i include alcohol and weed. i'll try to find the name of the shop i went to, they gave me a business card and the guy working there was very helpful!
Have fun and be safe! let us know what you decide to do!

I intend to try shrooms for the first time in Amsterdam. I'll be with my two bst friends and one has experience tho. He told me to just go find a nice park on a nice sunny day and just chill out for a couple hours. Can't think of a better way.

bellelass 04-24-2006 11:34 PM

Please please dont try it with someone who hasnt done it before. And keep in mind it kind of lasts more than just a few hours. Just please be safe.

TERI 04-25-2006 01:22 AM

man i laugh for hours on shrooms. and i always have to go on a walk while on them.
if you do take them , might i suggest eating them with chocolate. it takes the nasty taste away. and dont over do it, if it's your first time or anytime for that matter.

Alright, I guess I have to step in as resident harm prevention geek here. Note that the following information does not condone the use of drugs, but if you're going to do it anyway, do it right.

Legality
Fresh psilocybin mushrooms are legal in Amsterdam, as they are in most other parts of Europe. Dried ones are not. So if you're offered dried shrooms, the seller is doing illegal business and hence should be approached with more caution... who knows what shady shit they're up to?

Friends
As stated several times, it's best to do it with someone who's already done them before. Preferably one who's tried the same mushrooms before. Whenever messing around with psychedelics, it's best to have someone with you who knows the ins and outs of a trip. That way if you start to feel bad, they can help you out of it. That said, 'shrooms aren't nearly as insane a trip as something like LSD, but it can still be very intense - and possibly confusing - for some, especially the unitiated.

Dosage
Take as little as possible to start, wait 20-30 min., and if you're not feeling anything, take a bit more. Shrooms are generally sold in grams, and a minimal dosage is about 1/3 of a gram. Go in those increments, mixing caps and stems. Keep in mind, though, that different mushrooms - even of the same species - can have varying amounts of psilocybin.

Mushrooms taste awful. After all, they grow in crap. Personally, I don't mind the taste (imagine it being old, raw corn) but the easiest way to take them is to chop them up and mix them into OJ and down it, or put it into a peanut butter & honey sandwich. Ask your local store what they recommend/have on hand.

The Trip
This will really vary by person and the mushrooms consumed. Some people have intense hallucinations, others just have a euphoric feeling with mild hallucination (i.e. visual distortion) whereas some people feel like they're melting into the ground and experience no hallucination at all. Either way, it can be very disorienting and can cause nausea at first. Whatever happens, relax and go with it. Fighting it will only make you feel worse.

For that reason, it's important to be in a comfortable environment. A pretty, uncrowded park can be good. A riverbank. Somewhere natural. Or a room filled with beanbag chairs and ambient music. You want everything to be relaxing and think happy thoughts.

Finally, wear comfortable clothes. There's a reason drugged out hippies wear sandals and loose, airy stuff, after all.

Possible Problems
Some sellers lace weak mushrooms with LSD in order to give you a hallucinogenic trip - and rip you off. This is SO not cool. For that reason, it's best to buy them fresh from a legal outlet. You can dry them yourself if you've got a few days.

If you're in too crowded/noisy a place, you may find yourself feeling paranonid, scared, or anxious. See above about being somewhere comfortable. You don't want to be sitting in front of some window in the Red Light District thinking your legs are melting into the cobblestone.

If it gets too intense and you feel like you're freaking out, make sure you have sugary drinks on hand. Juice. Sodas. Chocolate milk. Like strong weed, a good, easily absorbed source of sugar helps you come down faster. And while that's going on - don't panic. Simply try to relax and go with it until your head's clear again.

Overall, I think 'shrooming can be a positive experience. But I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that it could be a nerve-wracking freakout as well. Psychedelics give you what you bring to the table - go into it relaxed and with a positive frame of mind and they can be very enjoyable. Go in negatively and it'll just amplify that.

There's been some sage advice in this thread about doing it with a friend, being in a comfortable place, and starting slow. Please listen to that :) The last thing you want is a little touch of Amsterdamania and thinking "Hell, I'm only here once," eating a whole bag, and having the only lasting memory of your holiday to be a crazy bad trip trying to find your way out of the Van Gogh Museum. Believe me, I've heard that story several times...

Kiwi_Taylor 04-25-2006 03:21 AM

hey man, I'm thinking of trying shrooms for the first time, my mate says I should make mushroom tea. How many mushrooms is the usual dosage. And how can you tell if their the right kind of mushrooms

RootBrewskies 04-25-2006 05:54 AM

thanks for all the advice. dont worry, im not a total nut. i'm definately not going to amsterdam with a 'lets kill as many brain cells as possible attitude'. ive been there several times before and i'm sure i'll be back again, so i dont have the 'i'll only be here once metality either'.

i'll let everyone know what i'm going to do and how everything works out. maybe i'll meet up with some friends at the hostel that can help guide me through the experience. fortunately i'll be there with the person i am most comfortable in the world with so if i do decide to do it i'll at least be with someone who makes me feel at ease.

one question though. i know shrooms here in the US that you can buy are dried and the ones in amsterdam are fresh but i was wondering what the difference is. do the effects of the shrooms intensify if they are dried as opposed to fresh? some people have talked about taking a few days to dry them out then use them, but what would be the advantage of that?

Best advice ever! Saved my ass from freaking out so many times.

omisan 04-25-2006 10:24 AM

Kiwi - Mushroom tea will get into your system slightly faster than eating them, but since you probably don't get all the psilocybin, would be milder. A typical dosage of mushrooms would be 1/3 - 3 grams, so that's how much you'd brew. It won't taste good, though, that's for sure!

Root - dried and fresh contain the same amount of psilocybin. However, because dried stuff shrivels up and becomes more compacted, you just have to take less of it than you would fresh. And when it comes to something that tastes so crappy, the less you have to taste the better ;)

RootBrewskies 04-25-2006 10:37 AM

i'm actually interested in trying shrooms now just to see how bad they taste.

its like when someone eats something or smells something and is like, 'ewww, this is terrible, try this' or 'smell this'. and of course you do it, just out of curiousity to find out what other people define as 'terrible'. so now everyone says shrooms are so bad, that im interested to try them just to see what 'so bad' is. i dont anticipate liking the taste but i'm interested to see if its the worst thing ive ever had, cause ive eaten some pretty foul stuff.

but then again. maybe this is just the 10 year old boy inside of me, that wants to eat dirt or playdo or a bug just to see what its like.
