bed-stuy nyc? (and also a q about montreal!)
hey guys..
so excuse my ignorance here, but my friend lives in bed-stuy in brooklyn and i'll be staying with her while i'm there.
so how safe would it be for me to get the subway from jfk airport to her house in bed-stuy (not 100% sure where but its prob around utica ave station) with all my luggage at night time?
is it safer during the day?
and my other friend won't be in montreal when i'm there so that means i don't have free accommodation anymore . should i still visit montreal? what is there to see in montreal and can i do it in a day?

I would definitely go to Montreal. Forget your friend, you could get a hostel for $20 and have plenty of fun on your own.

There's plenty to see in Montreal. If you go to BK, tell your friend to meet you at the subway and help with your luggage if you must go at night. IMO, depending on how you're walking and with how much crap, you might look like quite the target shuffling luggage around at night in an unfamiliar area. Even in more residential areas of Manhattan, I might not do it. I would say wait until you have a friend in Manhattan, or even enough people to split a hotel room decently, and go see Montreal. Something different. If you're not getting a tour guide, Bed Stuy is going to be a rough home base for a good trip to NYC.

Haha.. wikipedia told me that Mos Def, Jay-Z, and B.I.G were from Bed Stuy too. I hired Dave Chappelle's Block Party as well to see what it's like...
I've stayed in Brooklyn before, when my friend was living in Park Slope. That felt safe to walk at night time alone... I had no problems getting around while I was there last time. But I guess Bed Stuy is another story...
I just spoke to my friend who is actually arriving the same day so I'll schedule my flight around his and we'll go in together... we've got a third Aussie on her way to meet us on the 2nd day so getting a hostel would end up costing us a bit too much for the 12 days (prob close to $1000AUD for all 3). Plus I wouldn't feel safe leaving my laptop + cameras + luggage in a hostel...
Would I be able to do Montreal in a day or 2?
