Idaho has some beautiful scenery in the various parks I would go for it (especially since you have been around the US before)
As an aside, Boise State played in one of the most spectacular college football games every played (Fiesta Bowl back in 2006). If you have even the slightest interest in American football you should try to view the game

Man, that's the funniest thread title ever.
I'm sure Idaho is beautiful. They're known for potatoes. Just want you to know that up front.
But it's like in Wayne's World when they go to all the different exotic destinations in the US and make cultural comments. Texas: let's raise and rope a bronco; Hawaii: mooka-laka-hiki, come on ya wanna lay me, pass the poi mahalo!); and then...
"Imagine, being magically whisked away to....
...Delaware. Hi, I'm in Delaware."
It's kind of like, Idaho. Hi, I'm in Idaho. But you're right, it could be flippin' sweet.

Southern Idaho is rolling plains and potatoes and is also known for a high population of a certain religious group that shall remain nameless... Northern Idaho is mountainous and quite beautiful, especially around Lake Coeur d'Alene and Pend Oreille. It's also known for having the highest population of (rabid) white supremacists in the country and if I remember correctly is the headquarters for the Aryan Nation. I believe Coeur d'Alene still has its White Supremacy Parade every year unless they've been shut down recently.

Idaho is not a state that often comes up on people's lists of places to visit...even if you're an American. I'm amazed they even have 1 hostel!
But I'm sure it's beautiful there, with the mountains and whatnot. If you like that mellow kind of place where there aren't really any attractions per se but still plenty of nice scenic places to explore I'm sure you'd have a good time.
And from my experience, Idahoans are very friendly!

i have family in idaho and ive been going there for many years. let me give you a little bit. if you go to boise, which is one of the fastest growing cities in the USA, you can have a good time. definitely try to catch a game at Boise State. Smurf Turf!! i noticed you made a reference to napoleon dynamite, and that was set in Preston, ID which is on the other side of the state from Boise so it would be a bit of a drive if you wanted to get there. as space virgin said, Idaho does have a healthy population of Mormons, but its hardly a majority in any of the larger cities and most people from Idaho, Mormon or not, are some of the most friendly, down-to-earth people ive met. Napoleon Dynamite was originally concieved, written, directed, and acted by Mormons you know, and that movie has a strong following within the group. ANYWAY, Idaho is kinda like Utah in that there is a lot of outdoors stuff to do, and a lot of places to do it. I have one uncle who breeds and raises Arabian horses, and another uncle who ranches cattle, and Southeastern Idaho's rolling hills make excellent country for horseback riding. My sister and her husband live just outside of Boise, and go dirt-biking and camping out there a lot. And if youre there in the winter, there a lot of ski resorts that get massive amounts of powdery snow. I think a lot of people only look at the East and West coast states as destinations and the everything in between as "fly-over" states, and boy are they missing out.

perfect movie quote! nail on the head. (sidenote, amber's "blinkchick" from delaware )
yeah, Idaho is only a destination if you want to get lost in some freakin' sweet mountainous area. i actually spent a week in a half backpacking in the Selway-Bitteroot wilderness couple weeks ago. frickin' sweet!
but if you're not looking for some good ol' country charm, i'd pick another city.

I was just in Boise a few weekends ago! I love it there. It's a very cool little city. The downtown is growing quickly but is still super small. Lots of brick buildings, good restaraunts, cheap shopping and bars! There is tons of outdoor things to do, hiking, biking, skiing...anything really. There is this little hole-in-the-wall hamburger place called Tasty Freeze that has all kinds of Dip Cones (like Dairy Queen dip cones, soft ice cream dipped in a hard coat of sugary goodness). They are SOOOOO good, the coconut flavor is amazing. Never tried their food, just the ice cream - priorities.
Someone mentioned Ketchum, ID above, which is a small town right by Sun Valley Ski resort. Another really cool place to go would be about 1.5 hours away is McCall, which also has a ski mountian and a big lake. It could be super fun if you find some people to head up there with you.
Idaho is beautiful. I hope you have a good time there - I have some friends there. If they are around I can see if they'll meet you for a dirnk one night!
Oh, and if you need any Portland advice, let me know. That's where I grew up and one of my favoirte cities in the world

So true. I've known people who've been there and loved the mountains, but Idaho is the only state I've not been to.

Can't speak for his trip, but I'm actually off to Idaho next weekend for a mini-reunion with some good college friends!
I'm pretty excited as we're heading up to my friends family's vacation home in McCall for a few nights and some skiing - - although I don't think I'll be skiing b/c of a bum knee, but I still love the mountains and snow and could possibly do some snowshoeing instead.

Sounds like fun Mush....I guess I never thought of Idaho as a place to vacation but it could be cool to go ski there. I wonder if the resorts are a little more affordable than the usual places in Colorado and Utah...

^I know my cousin has been to Jackson Hole, WY before to do snowboarding and she said Sun Valley was a lot less expensive.
