For starters, check out this thread about Route 66.

The Grand Canyon Hostel in Flagstaff rocks! I loved that place - one of the nicest hostels I've ever been to. In fact, the staff may still have a mix CD or two of mine at the front desk.

Keep an eye out for people posting their Grand Canyon tickets on the bulletin board there. The national park receipts are good for a week, I believe, so people just buy 'em and pass 'em on to the next traveler who happens upon it while it's valid.

I dunno if you've done Vegas before, but I'd personally advise against staying at the Stratosphere. It's waaaaaaaaay off the strip and away from the other attractions, and the neighborhood it's in has earned it the name of "Stratosfear."

If you have the time to detour from Santa Fe on the way to Arizona, I *very* highly recommend checking out Monument Valley, UT, near the four corners. One of the most beautiful places in the world, IMHO.

I haven't been to Vegas since I was a kid, and that was always with my parents and grandmother.

Stratosfear!? Eeek! Too bad they've already charged me $50. It's listed as being on the Strip, but I checked a map and it's way the hell out. But supposedly there's a a bus?

Eh, for Vegas hotels are all crazy expensive at the time we're going to be there. Hopefully we won't die!

We roadtripped out from TX to L.A. last year. There's some real scenic spots and formations along the state borders. The "dead zones" would be West TX and East NM. Nothing but scrubby flatlands as far as the eye can see there... (Only real point of interest there being Roswell - for UFO buffs.)

BTW, a GPS comes in VERY HANDY for these long roadtrips!

Stratosphere is far off the main drag, but it's easy enough to hop a cab wherever you want to go. I wouldn't sweat it. The end of the strip near Circus Circus is MUCH cheaper than the newer end, by Caesar's, Bally's, New York New York, etc.

Hey...you're screen name...that wouldn't be from a line in a song, would it...?

It's from the Beck song.

Okay...now I remember where I heard something similar (a different song). There's a band named Marillion who does a song with the line, "I'm your Nightmare Surfer Babe..."

Still, your screen name is cool...
