OK so I really need your helps people! I am in NY at the moment and am gonna be here until around early July. After that, I'm heading across to CA. That's as much as I know right now. Has anyone else here made this trip and whats the best way to do it? I can drive and am thinking about this (I heard there is a place where u can drive someone's car cross country for them because they are moving or whatever....?). I want to see a mix of forests deserts towns and cities. I;m traveling alone. the time it takes to get there doesnt matter. It cant be expensive. I also need to make the trip back across to NY in late august. I'd appreciate any help you guys can offer, i mean anything at all! Thanks~~~ Josh

Well, the first decision is whether to take the northern route (primarily along I-80, at least in the west) or the southern route (mostly along I-10, with bits of Route 66 along the way).

A lot of this would be based on the weather when you go.. seeing as how you're doing it in the summer, either would be fine, with the southern route being *much* hotter - I'm noramlly not concerned about that, but if the car you take has a tendency to overheat.. well, you know the deal.

Also, you could take one way out and the other way back, and see MUCH more of the country that way.

There are a ton of road trip planning web sites out there where you can enter your destination and it'll give you different ways to go there, what's along the way, etc. Give it a go!

First off, Welcome to Travelpunk!!

I love raod tripping, and if I was driving it I think I would go with I-80. Its probabl going to be a fastes route depending on where you are landing in CA. Also a nice drive.

Happy Trails

You can take the Amtrack from NY to Seattle for sure, not sure about going south...and that might all change with the budget cuts that were just in the news. I wouldn't go on the bus unless you have to. Roadtripping it would be my number one choice!
