Default US road trippin tips?

yeah so me and one of my friends were chatting this evening and thinking about doing a "down south" road trip from Cincinnati, Ohio to Baton Rouge, LA and back when I get back next spring... our goal is to see some random and cool shit in the south. Any suggestions? Our estimated trip length is 5-7 days. The only places we REALLY have to go to in between the 2 places is Memphis, TN. Everything else is up in the air, as long as we hit KY, TN, AL, LA, MS... we don't care where we sleep but really want to see some of those oddball places and eat at some of those wacky ass diners. I've googled a bit and haven't found exactly what I want, so if anyone has any good road tripping experience, let me know!

Wish I could help you, but sadly I know little about those states. I would totally suggest staying somewhere on the way down thats on the Mississippi river. Take a nice stroll on the river and feel like Tom Sawyer and Huck!! If you happen to come through Charlotte, NC before we head to Eastern Europe, you are more than welcome to crash and have a beer etc....

All I have to say is that Cracker Barrel is the place to eat on a budget.
All you can eat biscuits and gravy for 2.79
One meal a day is all you need after two plates of those!
I've driven back and forth between chicago and phoenix 7 times and between denver and phoenix 9 times. Trust me on this one kids.

Ok try this site http://roadsideamerica.com/ I think you might like it. I've never used it. But it looks quirky! The best advice I can give you is to watch your intake of energy drinks!

Memphis is the center of all things BBQ! You have to go... nay, you MUST go! Eating BBQ there is like the Superbowl, the World Cup, and an Eagles reunion all rolled into one! Another weird but veru cool place to see in Memphis (aside from the Mecca of the South: Graceland) is the Ornimental Metalworks Museum. It was surprisingly neat!

If you're in Tennessee... Nashville! It's on- the- way to Memphis anyway and it's got some good points. You know, that whole Opry thing. It's I 40 West straight out of Nashville to Memphis. Takes about two to two- and- a- half hours.

Interstate 65 branches in Nashville as well. 65 can be a straight shot down through Alabama (which is fast and has some pretty unique towns along the way) and links in with I10 at Mobile, taking you through the Gulf Coast area. The drive along the Gulf through Miss and LA are actually kind of cool.

Its been years since I have been through LA, but we got pulled over and the weird ass state trooper confiscated our beer instead of giving us a ticket for 20 over. I guess I am trying to say, always have lots of beer on you.
