So okay I got accepted into the program I wanted at UW, and pending all other acceptances (I'm trying to play the field haha) I will be accepting and moving to Seattle next August. So I'm over here trying to prepare for this, look at apartments online and look for places for part-time work... I've been scouring cragslist.com and nwsource.com for stuff but I know there are some TP-ers frmo the Seattle area so I had a few ?s....

1. good neightborhood to live in...? I know I'll be going to UW and it will make sense to live in the U-district, but I was just wondering if rent was cheaper anywhere else nearby. I plan on having my Jeep out there so driving isn't an issue but I am not interested in living on the other side of Seattle and sitting in rush hour traffic trying to get to an 8am class. I would like to bike there (going to be having my bike too) or something too maybe. I dunno I am looking for a fun place to live with stuff like grocery stores (anything organic too... whole foods, trader joes, the good stuff!) nearby, stuff to do, cool people, but nothing too distracting as I will be needing to study my ASS off.

2. how easy is seattle to navigate? I'm way good with maps/directions and get get a place down pat pretty good. I lived in chicago for 2-3 years and I know thatplace like the back of my hand. how is mass transit? easy to figure out? is it just busses?

3. what's the general concensus of the population... I feel like I am going to have a hard time finding a place to live because everyone wants roommates who are for peace and yada yada (on craigslist anyway) and I'm in the military and even though I am liberal, I have a feeling that may be hard to overlook....

anything else fun/interesting/whatever you can add would be a plus! and if you think you need a roommate next fall, I'm your girl! haha

the u-district is going to be the cheapest area to live in, although, there are alot of vagrants. but the student population out numbers them, so they stay mostly to the ave (the street running parallel to the UW). i've worked for starbucks on the ave for over a year now and walk a mile to and from work during the night and day. i haven't had any problems. there is also a trader joe's and whole foods in the u-district. some other neighborhoods that i think are ideal nearby are wallingford, ravenna, wedgewood, ballard, fremont, sand point...i live in ravenna.

the public transit is super easy. i take it everywhere. there aren't any trains like chicago (i lived there for 7 years) but there are buses that pick up almost anywhere and drop off almost anywhere. totally easy to get a hang of.

as for being easy to navigate, yeah, i think so. there are lakes and mount rainer as natural land markers to help with orientation, as well as being able to see the seattle city skyline from most places due to all the hills.

as for population, i wouldn't worry about it. we aren't all hippy liberals out here. this city is just too big. you won't run into problems with that. i'll keep my ear out for any rooms that are renting, but you shouldn't have any problems, there should be hundreds up for grabs right now around the UW.

fabuloso! I'm kind of suprised the u-district is the cheapest to live in, it wasn't like that when I lived in Chicago. you got a better steal if you lived a neighborhood or 2 away from the school. I just said fuck it and lived in wrigleyville haha.
