What is there to do in/around Houston, TX?
So I'm traveling with roommate/good friend to Houston for Spring break 07! His sisters will have lived there for about a month when we arrive, so they probably won't have a vast knowledge of the city; so I was hoping to get some insight from Tpunkers about the city.
I know Galveston is nearby, is that a good beach to spend SB at? I would enjoy parks, hiking, camping etc. nearby...anything good? I guess if there are other interesting places to go things to see, people to see...? O yea, I think we're planning on going to the rodeo, supposedly the biggest in the U.S. But I'm a northerner so I have no idea what to expect. Yup, that's about it. Sank you. |
When are you going to be in town? I'm staying in Houston now, but haven't been around much in the last few years...
Galveston is cool, kind of dirty for anyone used to white sand beaches and stuff like that. I'm sure they'll have plenty going on during spring break. Other than the beaches, the historic downtown area called "The Strand" is known for is dining and nightlife. Lots of cool little bars, pubs, and places to hang out. Be careful where you stay, because once you get into the city itself, it's pretty ghetto. Downtown Houston itself has gotten a lot better over the past several years, they've spent a lot of money revitalizing the area and cleaning it up. Lots of stuff can be pricey, like any urban area, but you can still find cool places to hang out. I've spent most of my life in texas, but never been to a rodeo- I'd be no help there. I gotta be honest with you here: if someone told me they wanted to visit Texas, Houston would probably be last on my list of places to see. That being said, you can still have a good time while you're here. If you have time to get up to Austin (3 hour drive), there's infinitely more going on- and many more options when it comes to hiking and seeing nature. I'll be in town for the next month or so, let me know if I can help with anything. |
The only thing I remember of my brief visit to Houston is the NASA Space Center. It was pretty cool, but I'm not sure if you'll be into that.

Our break is march 3-11 I believe. So Houston isn't really that great of a traveler's city eh? Bummer...we'll still have a good time tho. :) |

I was under 21 (unable to drink in bars) when I left the country a couple of years ago, so I'm not really familiar with the bar/club scene here. This is a good site to find local spots, several categories to search through... |
