I've stayed at the banana bungalows in cali and loved em. They were some of my favorite hostels.
Some people, especially americans i think, get so used to the cookie cutter HI hostels that hostels like banana bungalow, ie a little less clean, a little less organized, run by "hostelers" most of the time instead of hired staff, seem like a bad deal. Personally though I have decided that if given the choice of a HI hostel or a unknown one, I will go with the unknown.
So yeah I dig banana bungalow. I have not been to the Hawaii one yet though.
