I will be going alone and starting to get a bit scared!! Think I'll be ok in San Fran and stayiong with a friend in LA but really worried ablout New York! Has anyone got advice for a girl travelling alone in America?!

Don't worry! You'll be fine. Keep a close eye on your stuff at wherever you're staying and be aware of it when you're walking around.....don't walk around in unfamiliar places alone at night. Basically, just use common sense! Travelling alone is great because you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. And you'll meet tons of people along the way to hang out with if you so desire

You'll be fine. New york gets a bad rap, but it's not any worse then any other big city. Just use common sense and you will be fine, and you'll have a great trip.

Unless you've never stepped foot outside of a village in the Cotswolds, you'll be fine on your own in any U.S. city. If you've spent any time in any of the UK's big cities you're totally prepared. Have a great time!!

You'll be absolutely fine - especially since you'll be making tons of friends along the way. Hell, after a while, you won't even want to leave! (Until you find out the Fanta here sucks.)
Anyway, give us a shout when you get to SF!

New York isn't as scary as it sounds! Trust me! I've lived near Philly all my life and now I'm living near NYC. I prefer NYC over Philly on the safety level. I've walked around in downtown & central Manhattan, Queens, and some of Harlem without any problem.
Just observe New Yorkers for the first day. They have a certain walk, look, attitude. Simply adopt their little quirks and you'll be fine. Look like you belong...and don't worry about being a tourist (camera and standing in awe of Time Square) everyone does it unless their hardcore New Yorkers. Just don't stand in anyone's way...and always may attention to your surroundings. If you need someone to hang with give me a call...PM me for my number. Also I suggest booking a hotel/hostel in the East Village...it's the best. Always something going on...and a hookah bar!

Thanks that makes me feel a lot better! Not a Cotswolds girl I'm from just near Manchester so hopefully I'll be able to cope. All the things you hear about NYC made me a bit worried but reckon I'll be fine. Cheers guys x

Drop a line here when you're in San Francisco. I'll tell you where you can get some good food and cheap beer. This city has the best burritos you'll ever eat in your life.

How are you getting from place to place while you're in the states?
New York is a fantastic city, and I agree with what other people have said - if you've been to any major European city and you know how to handle yourself there, you'll be fine in NY. It just comes down to common sense, not going down dark alleys and such where there are no people, not letting yourself get stupidly drunk if you've got no friend(s) to look out for you, not carrying too much cash/valuables on you if it can be avoided, etc etc. I absolutely love NY, and can't wait to visit on my current trip around the states.
