Hiya all,
am dying to go to these places sometime in the next year, hopefully September, money permitting, but nobody I know wants to go, so am going alone. However, as a chick going on my own, I want to make sure I get all the facts up front. Is it fairly acceptable for women to travel alone to these places? Also, am hoping ot spend like 4 days in Slovenia, 4 days in Croatia, then like 3 days each in Bosnia and Yugoslavia, any idea of how pricey I can expect it to be? Any tips on what to see or do in these places would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

First of all, you will be absolutely fine travelling alone in this region. I went to Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia with a mate last summer and felt perfectly safe, even at night. We also met a few lone travellers (including women) and no-one had any real problems. I will be going back in June/July this year by myself.

As for prices, Croatia is EXPENSIVE. I'm talking London prices for pretty much everything. Well, we only stayed in Dubrovnik which is very very touristy, so not sure if this applies to elsewhere or not. Bosnia and Serbia were much cheaper, and travel in the whole region is very cheap by western standards. An overnight bus from Belgrade in Serbia to Mostar in southern Bosnia cost about £10. Accomodation was generally €10 a night, for both Hostels and Pensions.

Well, if you go to Belgrade, Yugoslavia - check out the Nikola Tesla museum for me and let me know how it was! He was a 6'6" allegedly-celibate genius who made some fascinating discoveries - like the radio, AC current and some revolutionary inventions he was still experimenting with until his death.

"I am now planning aerial machines devoid of sustaining planes, ailerons, propellers, and other external attachments, which will be capable of immense speeds" - "My Inventions" - Tesla's autobiography. To a Westinghouse manager, Tesla wrote, "You should not be at all surprised, if some day you see me fly from New York to Colorado Springs in a contrivance which will resemble a gas stove and weigh as much. ... and could, if necessary, enter and depart through a window." - "Tesla: Man Out of Time," by Margaret Chaney, pg.198. Tesla intended the world to have a free, wireless, source of power "My power generator will be of the simplest kind - just a big mass of steel, copper and aluminum comprising a stationary and rotating part, peculiarly assembled." Further, according to museum officials at The Nikola Tesla museum in Belgrade, "he left sketches of interplanetary ships. This information, however, has not been made available to western scholars." Telsa: Man Out Of Time, pg. 203.

i am in croatia RIGHT NOW. i was in slovenia before and will be in bosnia and serbia next. i have to say that i have probly felt safer in slovenia and croatia than in spain or italy. and since its the offseason, stuff isn't overly expensive. i have been to ljubljana in slovenia, with day trips to lake bled and the skocjan caves, both HIGHLY recommended. look them up. i stayed at fluxus hostel which i would recommend. then i was in zagreb, split, and now dubrovnik in croatia. i have to say that slovenia has been more expensive, maybe because of their eu status and it will only get worse once the euro is adopted, but croatia has been affordable. rooms for 10-12 euro. you can find a big slice of pizza and a bottle of water for about 2 euro in dubrovnik. and the people here have been AMAZING. i will wander up to anybody and ask them a question. all the young people speak english. i've asked where places are and had people walk me to them. really awesome, love the people.
