So obviously i'm new to this site, but i would just like to say you guys rock! Now to the questions...i'm thinking of flying solo for my trip through europe, but i was just wondering how much money i should bring for three months? Would it be better if i just brought a friend (who wants to go) to help on costs? Should i bring traveler's checks, my atm card, and my visa card? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to have another newb!

In my opinion you should plan for around 2k a month, thats food, hostels, tours. 2K is just to be safe, I'm sure you could do it in less.

Its really up to you if you want to bring someone. I'm flying solo this May, so no worries, but it probably would cut down the cost a bit.

Personally traveler's cheques are a bit out dated, but it may be a good idea to have a couple if the bank machine eats your card. (I hate saying that it freaks me out) Atms are every where now and an atm card and a credit card will do fine!!

I highly reccomend bringing a credit card or atleast having one and memorize the #. This way you can book hostels over the net, huge time saver!

Hope that helped!! If you have any more questions there are TONS of people here to help!

Cheers

Hey tnorwick... Welcome to the family! Glad you decided to join us a post. Hope you have a great time here, and enjoy your trip.

To answer your questions...

Going solo shouldn't be a problem, you can always meet people along the way. For three months.. I would plan for between $4500 and $6000 US/Euro. That should be sufficient, depending on your travels and what you plan on doing.

As far as what to bring, your ATM card should be sufficient in Western Europe and most major cities in E. Europe. Otherwise, just plan ahead with cash withdrawls. You might want to take a Credit Card for, in case shit. You never know when you might lose your ATM card, or have an emergency expense and your CC may save the day.

Any other questions, feel free to ask

Travelpunk... it's everywhere you want to go.

perhaps we can have our own VISA card and make a commercial.

Ticket to Paris $750
4 nights Hostel stay $85
Cab fare: $35
Meeting the people you have been posting with for the last 6 months: priceless.

With the new Travelpunk Visa you can finally afford to take that trip to new lands to meet new friends.

Sorry... didn't mean to just skew this topic.

Just as an added thought to all the suggestions above...if you haven't already done so, make sure you set up a PIN to be used with your credit card. That way in case of emergency, like if you lose your ATM card, you can get cash withdrawals from an ATM iusing your CC, versus trying to do it at a bank with someone who may have a hard time communicating with you or just doesn't want to give you a cash advance.

Welcome to the boards tn21! Traveling along is cool, taking someone is risky, unless it is someone you've done this type of traveling with. Even very close friends don't necessarily make great backpacking partners, and if the only reason is for splitting finances, then be sure to clear out all of the spending/sharing protocol before you depart, you'd be surprised how different people can turn out to be in a traveling situation w/ respect to $!

Thanks for all the advice!!! I'm planning on going it alone, i figure that way the only person i have to blame for mess-ups is me...but honestly, i kinda like the whole "finding myself" kinda thing. I know that i'm definetly going to have more questions later, but until i can actually think of some, thanks!!!
