don't worry about it your well old enough if you want to go it alone, you'll meet loads of people,

and be cool, your not afraid, your apprhensive, which is good because it makes you think, so you know what will happen when you go and do it any way

oh and WELCOME TO TRAVELPUNK!

have good adventures

I'm also in a similiar situation. I'll be 17 when backpacking and I was worried it would somehow have drawbacks. Like meeting people would be tougher because I am young? And partying? I definately can party and in the US can drink illegally but how about in Europe? and in the hostels, do they have age restrictions? It's a bummer because i'll be graduated from high school but still 18, but I heard that if you have a copy of your diploma it helps? Any advice?

Dont worry Krobin, drinking is not a problem in europe, if you look old enough in the states then your fine in europe Im 18 the now, but 19 in two days, woohoo! Dont know about the situation with clubs though, some will be stricter than others, just have to act mature and you'll be fine.

wow that's hard-core....I def wouldn't bother to bring the diploma nice idea though.......haha i can just see ya hauling it around to each hostel you go to holding it out like..... aw man . u dont really hv to worry about drinking down there though b/c most countries the legal age is 16. The only place u might hv a bit of a problem is the UK,where it's 18, but im pretty sure they're quite lax about it in most parts. I feel ya bout the late birthday though.....it friggen sucks ass!!! Ah well, im over it.
