Hey my name is Jessi and I'm just joined today. For starters, I'm going to be in Florence for four months this fall (2005) to study, and I'll be on my own out of school in Europe for Dec. and half of Jan. I have been trying to prepare myself as much as I can- lots of reading- but the more research I do, the more I find I have never been so afraid to own a pair of ovaries... I keep hearing these horror stories about young 19-year-olds like myself who just wanted to travel and then they disappear or get hurt or other freaky things. My fear would never keep me from my travels, but a few reassuring words and/or safety tips from you fine friends wouldn't hurt. Any places that are really dangerous and I should just avoid all together?

Hey, Welcome! Sounds like a blast. You really have nothing to worry about. Florence is a beautiful place. I have never read any statistics about Florence, but when I was there I felt very safe. Actually I felt safer there than a lot of places in Europe. But even in the most "seedy" of places I felt fine. Maybe that's just cause I'm a big idiot, but you shouldn't worry. That doesn't mean you shouldn't pay attention to your surroundings and stay out of trouble (although trouble can be fun). It's natural to be nervous, you don't really know what to expect no matter how much you read or people tell you about the area. It's a wild adventure into uncharted territory. That's the fun of it. You'll make friends before you know it and then you won't worry so much. Have a blast.

The only place I've ever felt at risk was walking down a really nasty street in Amsterdam - ironically, on a Sunday morning, and I was trying to get to church!

Obviously stuff sometimes happens (I was being followed/hassled by a slimy guy), but that could just as well happen at home, and the way you handle it is more or less the same. Be smart, be aware, look confident, and you should be just fine. Think about all the millions of women who travel all over the world every year, and compare that to the number of horror stories you hear. The odds are in your favour anyway, and you can up them with just a sprinkling of common sense.

When I travelled on my own, I found that I met tons of people, and had people to hang out with whenever I wanted.

As a personal policy, I do avoid war zones, though...

Welcome!

Don't worry. We *all* hear stories about that but honestly, there are far more stories about people-- especially young women-- being attacked at home. (And by "home" I mean in their "home town".) Take the same precautions that you would when you're alone on your own turf. You'll be fine. B)

Have fun!!!
