Dont worry...you should be fine! The US can be a very safe place to travel, but if you really are worried about meeting some derranged men alone along the way, just hook up with some of the people you meet at the hostels & you can travel with them. You guys can watch each others backs! My advice would be to talk to some of the locals during the day that seem trustworthy & get some of the inside information as to which areas you should probably avoid during the night-times, B/c during the day you should be relativiely safe. It's generally in the wee hours that the street gangs & shady ppl roam. Seriously though, you should be fine, & there really isnt as much of a worry for the smaller towns. It's generally in the big cities that you might come accross trouble....I do not however recommend hitch-hiking as that just seems to be asking for it. Other than that, HAVE A GREAT TIME! (& even though you probably are planning on it....I hope you dont neglect seeing some of Canada while you're up here the wildlife in Alberta/BC cannot be beat!

hey there! how exciting! don't worry, you will have an amazing trip. Even though you hear there is so much violence in the US, it is still safe for a traveler (you have more chance of being killed by a spouse or relative in the US then just being a target on the street). That said, of course you still want to be careful; there are bad areas in any city but if you exhibit common sense you'll be fine. Also, loads of people, I would guess most, on the boards here are from the US so you should try and post while you're here and let us know where you are, so you could meet up with some people and maybe even have a place to stay at various points! Hope to hear from you.
Love,
Lauren

Just as an FYI hitch-hiking is against the law now in most states. I had a buddy going from Chicago to South Florida and was going to hitch-hike and got as far as Kentucky when they locked him up!! So FYI do not even try it.
Hey if you post your intenery I can guarentee a bunch of us T-Punks could help you out on where to go and not to go on your trip!!
If you come buy way of Chicago don't forget to hit us up there are a bunch of us TP's out here. Have a Great Trip!!!!

In most western states you can still do it i think... there are always hitchhikers here in AZ... though there is NO way i would do it here. I did it alot up in colorado... something about that place made me trust everyone though...

Hey Stokely!
Don't know if you're still in LA or not, but let me know if you are! I'm local out here, and could tell you some cool places to check out while you're around. Maybe even meet up for a drink.
Cool stuff to see in LA:
- Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd (But don't plan on making a day of if cuz there isn't much else in the area
- Shopping on Melrose (Lots of cool rocker and vintage shops)
- Venice Beach (Especially on Sundays, since at around 5pm till after sunset there's a crazy big drum circle that breaks out... lots of fun!)
- The Getty Center (Cool museum, amazing architecture, and a nifty view)
- Bar hopping in Los Feliz (Hipster heaven)
Anyway, those are my "I've got someone visiting and I want to show them around" stand-bys... What have you done so far?
