im sure some of you have seen my posts up about me traveling the us, so i wont go into much detail. basically, im wondering what the best method of traveling would be? i dont mind walking, and hitch hiking. iv done both a lot before.

im just suddenly concerned about transportation. should i look into discount bus passes, or what? is it easy to get to and fro when on the road?

how should i go about traveling with regards to transportation, and what can i expect?

i just found the website for greyhounds domestic travel discounts, and you get unlimited bussing for $522 for 60 days.

is that good, or should i not even bother?

You are talking about traveling in the states right? Greyhound is an inexpensive way to travel, but alot of the time the bus stations are in the 'bad' parts of town and some dodgy people on them. However, the pros might out weigh the cons if you get one of their specials. like 40 bux coast to coast... The train is quicker, but it cost more... and the stations are not in a bad area, but some times they are pretty removed from the main areas of the town you are traveling to.

Public transportation can often be poor in some cities in the US, though there are some exceptions. The greyhound special you mention sounds pretty good, though like Jive mentioned, you might run into dodgy people. Trains are not usually worth the price from what I have seen...you can usually find a flight for the same price. Car rental could be an option...?

honestly man I would stick with amtrack if I were you. Greyhound blows.

Amtrack still goes most everywhere you would want to go anyway. NY down the east coast to chicago to denver to the rockies to grand canyon to california

I think amtrack would be better. Like everyone else voiced greyhound can be in real shady parts of town.

if i remember right on amtrack's website they have a deal with unlimited travel in coalition with greyhound. I think that would be a better deal.

Remember, Amtrak isn't like the european trains. Everyone here travels by car and we don't use the trains or buses for common transportation. At least not nearly to the extent of most european cities.

Amtrak isn't bad but it isn't compareable to European trains.

Are you planning on traveling between states or within them mostly? Travel within states is specific to that state. For example, New York has great transportation and you can get anywhere fast and cheap on the subways. In California, you aren't going anywhere unless you drive yourself.

As far as travel between states. I'd say fly. Greyhound will eat up a lot of your travel time. Amtrack (aka Slamtrack) can be more expensive than flying.

Check out some of the bargain airlines that specialize in state hopping like Southwest.

Look at car rentals as well. A lot of people rent cars one way and drive cross country.

Don't go Greyhound You will spend most of your time in a smelly cold bus talking to rednecks and listening to their outragous lies. I've taken grey a couple times when in a bind. A normal 3 hour drive took 5 in a half hours. because you have to get off the interstate and sometimes the Greyhound stations a miles off the interstate so when you stop at a station it could eat up 30- 40 min dependin on the distance and how long the bus stays their.

But if you do take the bus I recomend going at night. Less people less noise and the seats are some what comfortable.

As for amtrack I've looked at price and it's comparable with flight but I've never travled the US rails.

Oh yeah hitchhiking sucks in the states.
