so i know people buy tickets for flights on standby. they show up to the airport, get on a list and maybe get on the plane, maybe dont. i was wondering how exactly this does work. do people do this because they really need to go somwhere last minute or is it a normal way of traveling?
ive always had the most luck booking flights reasonably in advance to get the best deal. can u get good deals flying standby or is there a way to get a good deal standby? or are u basically stuck paying last minute ticket costs and paying a fortune for your flight. ive never done it myself so i was wondering how it works for people and if anyone has any experience getting good deals, or not good deals doing it.

As far as I know, at least with domestic airlines in the US, most don't offer standby travel any longer. One exception that comes to mind is AirTran, but you have to be 22 or under. As tumbleweedz said, WWM is the resident expert on all things airlines so he'll be able to offer more help (hopefully!).
my cousin's boyfriend works for delta and she flies everywhere standby but thats cause she has some year long ticket through delta that allows her to fly anywhere and only pays taxes. its like a dream come true. so i dont know if delta offers standby or if she just gets to do it because she is under special circumstances.

Ok well what you are talking about is an airline employee. Like WWM works for US Airways. Part of the benefits package for US Airways is free airfare. The only hitch is that you have to fly standby. Now from what I have done as far as standby goes is this. If you don't work for the airline then you have to have already purchased a ticket. Then you can leave early but it will cost you an extra fee.
