I have been wondering about this for sometime, and I have finally got'n off my ass and research a bit...It is possible to travel pretty much around the world by freighter/cargo ship...
I have found a great resorce for this kinda adventure with a very informative FAQ section, I unfortunatly will prob not get to travel this way because of the time it takes to get from one port to another, but if this can help even one person try this interesting way of travel, then my time was worth it, I will live the experience through you!!! ...Check this Site

That would be really cool, I was thinking about that as a way to get across the sea to Europe, but it looks pretty expensive. Although it's not much more then an airline ticket. To go from the Great Lakes to probably Morocco would be $1495 for a single cabin. The trip would last from 16-25 days. Still would be cool though

It seems all cheap modes of transportation across the oceans are now non-existent. That kind of blows. I wish we could just hitch a ride on the freighters...

I've heard of people working as crew members on private yachts and getting a ride across the atlantic for almost nothing. people have their boats sailed across the Atlantic to the mediterrainean for them so when they fly over in the summer it will be waiting for them. this also works to come back across the atlantic at the end of the season. the only problem is that usually they sail over in the late spring and back in the early fall to accomodate for the height of the season and the good weather. If anyone is interested i will try to find more information. i actually saw a progr am about it on the travel channel a few weeks ago.

i found two sites that offer more information on doing this. although some seem to be where you live and work aboard the ship for a certain amount of time and visit all the locations that the yacht goes, there are also boats where they will use you for the transatlantic trip and then set you free!
The work4travel frontier club
this is a great site. it offers all sorts of different work/travel adventures. your not limited to boating but also working on conservations, tagging sharks or other action jobs. i think everybody should check this one out and read the WORK ADVENTURES LINK.
here is another, only this is more of a search engine for that type of work
