Anyone here taken a road trip into/around Mexico? Since both vacation plans for this spring (Puerto Vallarta & UK + beyond), we're thinking of extending a trip to Texas a bit and renting a car and heading south across the border. I found information on stuff like the legalities and getting through custums, yadda yadda.

Few things I had a hard time finding were road conditions - I understand that most of their roads are not what I'd be used to. We'd be going from San Antonio, across to the Pacific coast and possibly going as far down as Mazatlan. I'd like to drive along the coast, so I'm not sure how the roads would be.

Also, do you know gas prices are in comparison to the States? I couldn't find any new information or an approx price per liter. I know the price is consistent throughout the country courtesy of the monopoly on gas stations.

One other thing - anyone have any toll prices? The only site I found was all in Spanish. I just hear they're "pricey."

Anyhow, any info would be great.

Thanks for answering my questions TravelPunk-asses :greenguy: .

Okay, it's changed a little anyhow. We're taking Greyhound to Tampico from San Antonio. Any advice?

My brother in law and his wife (she's Mexican, they both live in Texas) both think we're crazy, like Mexico is the new Iraq or something. I understand there is a lot of drug related crime in a lot of areas and some other dangerous happenings (I do know how to read) but I don't think it's that dangerous.

Then again, neither of them have ever really traveled (her family is FROM Mexico and she's only been once).

Red face

Many moons ago, I took a bus between Del Rio/Monterrey/Mexico City and then flew to Cancun. Once you get past the border...it becomes a desolate desert with nothing but occasional shacks on the side of the road for miles on end. And hardly anyone speaks any English. But I don't think the roads were bad or anything - as it was pretty flat and dry all the way through.

As far as crime, most all the cops down there are corrupt and the whole legal system is based on connections. My friend's family down there on the border had their property fully fenced and driveway gated, from what I recall.

But, this was all years ago in college, so my memory is pretty hazy here...

I am from Mexico and have traveled around some places in Mexico. What places you plan to visit?, or what area you will driving around.?

I've tanken a road trip from Guadalajara to Iowa. I've also traveled around Mexico to Oaxaca, I have also visited "Huasteca Potosina". I have some friends who have traveled to other parts of Mexico.

There is a webpage where you input your intinerary and you get the distance, time and Tolls you have to pay (in pesos). This is the webpage:

http://portal.sct.gob.mx/SctPortal/appmana...ageLabel=P24063

this page is in Spanish if you have a problem using it, let me know to help you out.

The gasoline price is 6.53pesos per liter (1 dollar is 10.80 pesos) this kind is called "Magna", we have two kinds of gasoline, the other one is unleaded called "premium" and it is about 7.5 pesos per liter.

Regarding road conditions depends the area you will be driving. There are some good roads to conect the big cities. If you travel along the pacific coast, or any coastline the roads become really curvy and some parts are not in good condition so you have to go really slow and takes long to go from place to place.

In Mexico there is a special kind of police in charge of transit, regular police wont bother about driving. Corruption in the transit police is very common specially in "Mexico City", I can give you better details about this if you want.

If you need further information let me know.

Thanks so much for the wonderful info!

Unfortunately, due to an injury, we can't do the Mexico part of our trip anymore this spring.

I will definitely be doing it sometime in the future though and this post will be a wonderful resource. We were initially planning on going to Mazatlan then decided to go to Tampico.

Welcome!
