Just writing to let you all know that Trenitalia has tons of offers on their website. I just took a train from Udine (Near the border with Slovania) to Rome for 10 Euros. The regular price is about 50 euros. You have to purchase the ticket on their website. Make sure to go to the Happy Train promotion. They also have other promotions, but will only last till December.

I hope this helps someone as I ran into fellow backpackers on the train last night who paid full price and weren't aware of any specials.
