I am looking to go to London from Atlanta on March 29, 2006 and return on July 31, 2006. Layovers are not a concern. The cheapest I can find is $539 thru Delta and it happens to be direct.

My question is that I read on hotwire.com that airfares are cheapest within 60 days of the departure date. Does this hold true if I am buying my return ticket 4 months out?

Bottom line: Should I pull the trigger now or wait?

$539 for a direct flight sounds like a pretty damn good deal. You could wait and it might go down a bit, but I doubt it will go down more than a hundred bucks or so. Rising fuel costs, etc. If it was me, I'd go ahead and probably get the damn thing now-- the comfort of having the ticket at a decent price (if not necessarily the lowest) outweighs, in my mind, the somewhat lesser cost that you MIGHT get by waiting. Or you might NOT get.

Now, all this being said? I usually wait til January or so to purchase my tickets. That's just my $.02, you'll have to figure out what's better for you. Buying airline tickets is an eternal game of Russian Roulette that way. Just try not to beat yourself up too much if they end up going down in price after you buy them. It's not something you can really help. *shrug*

Well, I just looked it up for myself this morning, and SFO-London in late March is $609 (incl. taxes) on both BA and Virgin... considering that's only $70 more from the left coast, you might want to look around a bit more.

But SV is right - with rising fuel prices and such, now's as good a time as any to book. I remember BA offered me the option to pay $100 more for a changeable/refundable flight - kinda painful, but it might be a good deal in the long run if fuel prices continue to shoot up the way they have been.
