Hey, we're going to travel Chiang Mai to KL, Malaysia by train. Anybody on TravelPunk done that? If so, we have QUESTIONS and are hoping some kind hearted individual will give us ANSWERS. and possibly even true answers. or at least interesting answers.

well, i haven't crossed the border heading south - actually, well whatever: i posted to say DEFINITELY check out the dining car on your overnight train. i had heard rumors about it before both of my trips and just this last time i checked it out -total spaceout- haha, it was almost a disco in there with christmas lights and music and beer! a real highlight and i don't even drink normally... have fun ~ i think you gotta go kind of late like 8:30pm an on for it to be poppin' : ) it closes at 11pm.

I have taken the trains in Thailand, never out of the country though (to Malaysia). It's supposed to get pretty complicated when you leave the country. The train system is well organized....when you compare it to other options. The two common routes are from bangkok to chaing mai (north), and bangkok to surat thani (south). Almost everyone takes the night train w/ the sleeper cars so you don't waste the days. From chaing mai to bangkok is at least 10 hrs. I'm not sure what questions you have....but feel free to ask!
