Man I am tired of walking around, i want some wheels....you pay a visit to your local rental agency and you are turned away because you did not get an International Drivers Licence. These are available through Canadian Automobile Association and the American Automobile Association.

Ok so you have that do you???

Well you will be on you ass when you find out how much your insurance rates are, if you are under 25 (normally) the rates will be huge, they may not cover you at all.

OK so you got the Licence, and you got the insurance huh?

Well when you drive off the lot and look at the prices of fuel in European countries as of today they stand:
In the UK: its 74pence per litre, 74 pence = 1.22 US.....there are 3.78 litres in a gallon, that is $4.61 US a gallon (give or take)
And that is just an example, so even if you get out of the lot, you will not get very far as a "budget" trav'la

Your better to take the bus

One thing you may want to consider, that would be cheaper, a motorcycle or scooter, i don't know the costs involved in renting one of those, but it has to be cheaper if thats the route you wanna go. You will still need the Licence though, so don't forget it.

I get tempted to buy one of those things out here because they seem so cheap and they remind me of Europe!

As far as renting a car goes, remember that itīs still not completely thief-proof. That is to say, when you rent a car, and you drive to some city (any city really), thieves know rental cars when they see them. Donīt lock all of your valuables in the car. Your backpacks and bags, okay, but keep all of your valuables with you! never leave your money belt, digital stuff, or anything you would hate to get stolen. All a thief has to do is break the car window and steal your stuff. The rental cars can sometimes have the company decal on them, so itīs a straight up give away. Think the local police is going to care? Sure <_< . The car insurance will cover the car, but your stuff goes buh-bye!

I rented a car in Seattle a few years ago. Drove up to Vancouver. Checked into the Travel Lodge and brought my stuff inside. An hour later, Iīm about to go out to check out the local scene and the whole driver side window was gone! Shattered glass all over, outside and inside . Spent the whole night filing a police report and arranging another rental for the next morning. What a drag <_<
Thank God I took everything inside the hotel with me!

Be wise B)

It just seems that the idea of renting a car in Europe or really anywhere over seas, is a VERY expencive venture, with risks and hastles....not really worth it I don't think. I really think the moped/scooter thing could work though, cheap gas, easy to park and if you can get a good deal low cost to buy or rent.
