It seems to me that if you want to see the world, a sailboat is the ultimate way to go. Especially if you want to go to out of the way places like islands in the south pacific. Owning a boat would obviously be ideal, but even just acting as crew on different people's boats from place to place would be great. I know here in the US just by going down to the marina you can find people looking to take on crew to go to different places. There is always a need for extra hands to help out with keeping watch and the other mechanics of running a boat. I'd love to learn to sail on the open ocean and this something I've thought about doing. Mabye the opporunity will arise while in Europe this summer as a way to extend my trip when the money runs low. Has anyone ever done this or heard of people doing it?

i've viseted most of the west coast of scotland by sailing, the whole of Angelsea, and alot of wales, and part of the irish east coast, but i've been getting seasick befor i could walk to such an extent i'm more comfotable if the ground is constantly moving , naa but crusing is great way to see more remote areas that people wouldn't usualy see, but on the other side you can go strat to big cityies just afew miles up the coast, whereas over land, if you in a remote district, you may be a day, or several hours away from any of the bigger towns and cities, if you want to sea the world on a bout, u could try to find the replicas of old Gally's like the goldern hind, which take students/young people from all over the world to work them, if u go to the med/carribean alot of sail boats are charted to island hop, and always look for crew, to see the World, an Actual Cruise ship would prob be best, but maybe not as much freedom as a sail boat, as they won't be staying in each place as often... i'll prob think of some more later

Thanks for the websites Rozza. I take it your family has a boat? What kind and how big? I know sailing as an everyday past time is pretty common in Europe, especially in Scandinavia and especially for people like you who live on islands.

I came across this site on the web which looks pretty cool. They sail all over the place and you can arrainge to meet the boat someplace and then stay for as long as you want. They charge 30 dollars a day, but that isn't too bad and it includes food plus it would be a great way to expirience real sailing. They are going to be sailing around the Dalmation islands off of Croatia this July and August. I might look into it further.

Hey Rozza, whats a catalack? Is that like a catamaran? My friend and I are very set on going sailing when we go to Ireland, but neither of us know how to sail. I've been begging my dad to teach me for the longest time but he won't, I can't remember why.
This whole idea is pretty intriguing. Just..can you take accross the Atlantic? I can't see that happening, but I don't know.

a catalac is a make of catamaran made by the brit company catalac (ours is 30ft), if u wanted if u wanted to go across the Atlantic u'd want a mono-hull with a deep keel, the smallest i would do it in would be a sigma 43 they have a lead keel so if the capsize they just flip right round, its possible to do the Alantic in ireland do you want to do the sailing, and Atlantic sailing and racing, the biggest challenge would be the Fastnet, and god help you if you do that race , a general rule of thumb for that race is 'never do it in a boat smaller than the boat you were in the previous year' i think on average one boat turns over every year, and at least 3 people die, i kno people from the local club who turned over twice in the same race , but france is good for sailing, its like a national sport, any hoo i found the is on the have fun The Fastnet

hey i'm starting to live up this naval title aint i

my dad's had an idea for a second trip, sell dawn run (the catamaran) by a honda RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) X2 125 horsepower desial out boards and go up to the artic circle sounds cool, but i don't think this trip will work out like the Norway one, when he told me this idea today i wasn't to sure SELL DAWN RUN NO , i but i'm thinking now article circle does sound cool, (this would be a summer trip so no Aurora borealis , but would be cool, i'm guessing in canda you can see the Aurora cant you, whats it like? has any one seen the Aurora Australis? or done pole to pole?

mmmm I've only seen the Aurora once, I think. And that was just a big huge white streak across the sky. No waving colors or anything. But it was pretty nice, I was on my break from work and it was all starry. Pretty. That artic circle thing sounds like a blast. I had a choice last year to buy a boat or save my money for Ireland, and chose the latter. Now I really really want a boat. Guess I'd better start hoping for the lottery.
My dad did some big sailing race in PEI and I believe he capsized during it. Thing is he won, and yes I will brag about that all I please . I think I'm gonna wait 'till I move over to the Victoria or the maritimes before I buy me boat and sail de seas though. Despite the many lakes surrounding me (Lake Country), it's kinda limited space-wise...although Okanagan Lake may not be so bad.

Very cool about the sailing Rozza and Columbia, that's been a dream of mine too for a long time. My eventual goal is to take a year or two off and do an around the world sail, I think I'd need to win the lottery too.

I wanted to ask you Rozza, how long did it take for you to get comfortable enough to take your Scotland/Ireland cruise?

Here's my situation, I just bought a 24 foot sailboat through an online auction. I got a great deal. She's berthed in the SF Bay. I mostly bought her because she was very cheap, an awesome deal, and she'll get me out learning how to sail. I figure I'll start on the bay, but would like to work up to the point to do short coastal cruises on her.

well i've been doing scotland ireland wales and northern england my whole life so i didn't real have a chose in the matter , what type of boat do you have? i'm guessing its a 2 - 4 man crew? is she a motor sailer, or predominantly sailing/racing boat? and what kind of keel? if you want to do coastal cruising are you happy taking here in and out of habours/ marinas, and are you happy with berthing and tying up? cause as soon as thats ok go a head

She's a 24 foot sloop, with a full keel, mostly for racing/sailing. She needs a good cleanup, but everything seems to be working ok. All sails are in decent shape and the outboard runs, but needs a tune up. I've got a friend in SF that know how to sail fairly well, so once she gets cleaned up, we'll take her out. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm excited though, this will be my first boat. I need to come up with a good boat name though. Any thoughts? Other than my friend's favorite, "The Stiff Jib".
