Buses through MX to Yucatan?

Hey y'all ~

Well, call me crazy, but I just might do it... I have an extreme love-affair with buses, the people you meet on them, the things you see on them, the gradual and beautiful transition from whence you have come to your destination (as opposed to 'hop on plane, sit next to strangers and never exchange a word because everyone on planes are terse and well, you're only going to be together for a minute and then BAM!! you're in mexico, and like, 'whaaa...?').

so. i am being lazy and requesting assistance of y'all T-punkers; i know this info. is out there online, but for the life of me i can't quite navigate it. maybe it's cuz i'm so used to greyhound...

Has anyone ever taken buses from northern Mexico (i'd be comin from brownsville) to... south? i'm planning on going to the yucatan, and yes, I KNOW that would be a hellish, hellish trip... but it's the TRIP, man! :) there's like, 10,000 bus services in MX, and i can't figure out which ones go where, you can't reserve things, etc. etc.

ohhh woe is me. this is a generally stupid post, and simply my attempts to kill time while at work.

Never had to coordinate the buses in Mexico, but I'm sure you'll make it work. Prob easier to just figure it out while you're there but maybe that's just my style of travel lol. (Unless you have some sort of time frame?). Good luck and I'm sure you'll have a blaaaaast.

I've bussed from guatemala to mcallen, though not straight through. I'm not sure if there is any one bus company that operates in the entire country...I think most are regional or specific routes. ADO, Transpais and Estrella Blanca seemed to be a couple of the better ones. I know some companies have online routes and reservations, but I find its easier just to show up at the bus station, pick a company and buy a ticket on the next bus on the schedule. There is a pretty big difference between first and second class, if you have a preference either way. Also, be sure to have your passport/papers accessible since there are usually army checkpoints along the way.

Do you have any planned stops along the way, or you heading straight through from brownsville to the Yucatan?

Well... plans change, as they always do - i might just end taking a plane, if i can find one cheap enough; i believe that ultimately, with the costs of getting down to TX (i live in MI), and through mexico, it'd be about equivalent in terms of cost. this does not in any way undermine my extreme love of buses!! there will be time for that... and your advice of taking it as it comes (essentially) seems the way things always turn out, anyways! it's easier to get first-hand knowledge about things when you're actually THERE, yah?

i'm planning on doing a somewhat circuitous route of the yucatan, belize, and guatemala; i'd love to see every single country in CA, but.. we have to be realistic here, and create a journey of mindfulness, not rush, rush rush rush rush. anyways! at some point, i'll post a tentative 'itinerary' on here once i've figured everything out, so as to elicit more advice reg. transportation to actual places within the countries.

either way, i'm psyched beyond all belief; 3 more months or so til i'm ready... after that, it's back to hawai'i to hopefully work/busk my way to SE asia...

:)
