Default when to purchase easyjet tix?

In about 3 weeks (Sep 22!!) I'm jet-setting for Europe. I'll be landing in London at about 7am on the 23 and am planning on immediately hopping a cheap airline to Budapest to meet up with a friend of mine before taking the train on a nice, cozy route back to the UK

Question:

When should I purchase this Easyjet/Ryanair/ whatever ticket? Should I do it in advance or do you think I'd be able to book a flight after I land in London?

The only reason I'm reluctant to purchase in advance is that I seem to rarely make it to my destination on the day I'm supposed to, damn cancellations or 12-hour "delays".

Also, if it helps, I'm flying into London Gatwick.

What's the best course of action?

Ryanair doesn't fly to Budapest from any London airports. You'd have to fly to Dublin, then fly the next day (the 24th) to Budapest. Under the current sales, that would cost 9.99 pounds plus 38 euros ($71 plus all Ryanair fees).

EasyJet has a flight leaving in the afternoon of the 23rd (4:45 PM) for 38.99 pounds ($63) (plus 8 pounds if you check a bag up to 20kg).

Malev Hungarian also has an evening flight, leaving at 6:50 PM, for 23,400 florents. It's a bit more expensive, about $107.

I'd say easyJet is your best option. You're clearly not going to get low fares flying same day or next day if you book it when you land in London so I'd book now.

ahem...its forints

yes book it in advance b/c ryanair can be extremely expensive if you book not in advance

i would either take the ryanair flight the next day or pray to god my flight doesn't get severely delayed or cancelled

if it were me I would chance it on the easyjet flight the same day

I'd book in advance trying to get a flight less than 2 weeks in advance will make the tickets expensive.

Thanks for all the tips. Tickets purchased and fingers crossed! I seem to be cursed with getting stuck in Newark overnight. Happens on every international trip I take, last time a bird flew in the engine and the flight got cancelled. I suppose staying in New Jersey for one night is better than a plane crash.

I'm also debating between taking a BMIbaby flight from Paris to East Midlands later in my trip, but I'm unsure about what day I'll end up being in/leaving Paris because my trip is pretty flexible. I'm planning on spending four days in Paris so I would probably purchase the flight either the day I arrived or earlier while I'm in Germany when I figure out for sure what day I'll be in France.

Would you all suggest taking the flight or do you think a train/ferry/bus/whatever from France to England would be cheaper? I don't have any plans as to where I'm going in England because I'll probably stay with a friend for part of the time and bounce around with him so it doesn't really matter what city I travel into.
