Ive been looking at flights to Italy, Rome in particular. I have found a cheaper flight into Pisa with Ryanair and was planing on taking a day trip to Pisa during my trip anyways. So my question is if it is a better idea to fly into rome directly or into Pisa, do my day trip the 1st day and train/bus to Rome?

In terms of practicality, I cannot comment as I have never been to mainland Italy, but if it were me, I would fly into Pisa just to spend the day there.

From Pisa to Florence its about 5 euros and from Florence to Rome I believe I paid about 12 euros on the slow train. If the difference is greater than 20 euros it may be worth it. You can check the Trenitalia site for the exact cost Pisa - Rome.
