Jet fuel was historically cheap, only 6 years ago it was $.86/gal but now it's about $6/gal. A typical flight from NYC to Las Vegas uses somewhere around 3000-4000 gallons of fuel for a smaller plane (i.e. ~160 passengers). So each person is responsible for about 25 gallons of fuel.

But the future will be the issue, since airplanes will be dependent on fossil fuels for quite a time coming I'm sure.

Aviation is hurting really bad right now. I wonder how much of an impact steady rate increases and high gas prices back home will have on people's ability to travel?

Anybody here had to cut their trips short, or cancel all together because of your hurting pocketbook?

They should make it illegal for investors to buy oil, the price would plummit.

I agree, Adam. This whole thing is based on speculation. The price keeps going up because they expect it to go up -- not because what they're paying for is actually costing any more to produce. The U.S. government needs to simply step and regulate the cost of oil sold in the country -- just like they regulate utility prices. When a company can continually raise the price of an item that they bought for a certain amount and haven't used up, yet, it has gotten out of hand.

And the Fox News hacks who simply spout the oil companies' line about supply and demand are ignoring the fact that the U.S. used 1 million less barrels of oil in 2007 than 2006, and are on pace to reduce it by another million this year. And that crap about China and India causing the problem with their demand ignores the fact that, by and large, we get our oil from different places than they do.

It's all a scam, and unfortunately the politicians are too ball-less, or in the pocket of the oil companies, to do anything about it...

I'm sick of all these sudden charges. They should just straight up increase ticket costs instead of dancing around it.

If you purchase your ticket before June 15, you are bound by the old CoC terms and can therefore check one bag for free - just so you know.

Market forces will prevail in this matter. American Airlines has made it pretty clear that they're willing to squeeze every last penny out of the flying public, and frankly, if I can find another way to fly without using them, I will.

The price of fuel has sparked this, but the problem with cracking down on U.S. oil companies is that they are correct, they aren't the only companies in this business. Speculation on the world markets have driven prices up to their current levels, but it's virtually impossible to prevent those sorts of dealings.

The oil company profits are obscene - their claim that profits are only 5% of every gallon of gas pumped is absurd, since demand has dropped, not risen.

In the end, though - regulation of that industry is not the answer - the answer is to develop our own resources (synthetic fuels from coal, for example) reduce our demand (better mileage on cars and trucks, more efficient public transportation) and simply stop buying their products...

Yea, China/India always get scapegoated for everything by the US.

Nevermind the fact that:
Country----------% of Energy Consumed---% of World Population
United States------------------25------------------------4.6
China---------------------------9.9-----------------------21.2
India---------------------------3.11----------------------6.6
So, Americans guzzle over 5X the energy per their population size - whereas both China & India only use less than half. And yet, China & India are the "problem" here, not the US?

Or that we are burning 3 million gallons of gas per day in the Iraq War.

Or that the value of the US dollar has been tanking like Bear Sterns over the last few years, especially.

Or that gas was about $1.50 when Dubya took office. And now, it is over 3X that.

Simple fact is that we need to cut our consumption of petrol and find some other renewable alternatives.
