Young Person's Rail Card? Oyster Card? WTF! I'm confused...

So I'm reading part of the BUNAC website and it brings up the young person's rail card. It also talks about combining this with the Oyster card, and then something about minimum fares and what not. Now I'm just all confused. Orlando has next to no public transportation, except for our inept Lynx system, so I'm not used to all these different transport options.

I'll be living in London this summer in Richmond, zone 4. I've got some job prospects in Richmond, but obviously I'm going to be wanting to go into central London often. So what's the deal? What do I buy? How much am I going to be spending to go into the city.

I'm sorry... I'm sure the information is out there and for someone with more public transit knowledge its pretty easy... You'd think a college grad could figure this out, but I'm going out of my mind just a little, lol.

A young persons rail card is great if you are planning on riding the rails a lot as it can save you some nice cash.
I dunno much about the Oyster card.

I don't know anything about the "young person's rail card" but I do know Oyster is great for getting around London. There are all different prices for zones and inter-zone travel but I think the idea is that in the end you'll always save if you use the Oyster card.

The rail card is great if you plan to travel around the UK by train. It is also valid on the underground but due to the minimum fare requirement the saving is negligable. The oyster card is by far the best way of paying for the underground if you'll be living in London.

I bloody love my Young Person's Railcard! I got it free when I went to uni 4 years ago, and it expires in September. When it comes to renewing it, £24 isn't bad at all, if it means getting about 1/3 off my tickets. I could probably get my money back in two or three journeys.

But, like it's already been said, it may only be worth having if you're going to be using the regular trains, as opposed to the underground.

PS. Richmond is a lovely part of the country!

Oyster Card is for the London Tubes and Buses... (and if you're lucky the trains on the southbank area around Grenwich and stuff...) and the Young persons rail card is for train travel outside of london.

Not only does your young persons railcard gives you a discount on tickets to travel outside London but also for a day pass. There is a small discount (with your young persons railcard) when you take a day pass to travel within london as well.
