I am thinking about a short little trip for two weeks in september. I am in the very early stages of planning. So heres my questions.

I live in Minneapolis, and I can catch a direct flight from here to Amsterdam. Thinking of flying in there and going to Germany for Oktoberfest. From there I want to go to greece. What is the best way to do this? Flight? Train/ferry? What do you guys think??

Should I start in Greece and then go to Germany and leave from Amsterdam?

Talk to me.

Thanks in advance.

You will have to fly to go direct from Munich to Athens. Otherwise its at least a 35 hour train ride without including time between connecting trains. With only two weeks I would honestly pick one or the other. Munich is an overnight train from amsterdam so you can sleep while you travel and save time.

I will actually be in Munich for Oktoberfest, check out my meet-up thread if you want to click here for the thread

I am staying at the Jaeger hostel and we will be drinking of course! You better book your bed in Munich NOW because they are going fast. I have mine already. All the details are in the above linked thread.

If you just want to go to Germany and Greece, definitely fly between the two countries. With low cost carriers, it'll be as cheap or cheaper than 35 hours on a train, and take about two hours. Keep your options open about where you fly in and out of, too - you don't have to fly to Athens - low cost carriers go to Thessaloniki as well, and you could fly in there and out of Athens, covering more territory in Greece.

Heads up, though, a lot of the smaller hotels and pensions shut down after the season, and some of the ferry connections are reduced as well, so read a good guide to Greece and do lots of research on line to make sure you can actually get to the places you want to go, and have a place to stay there.

But be flexible - you might find another place that is open and accessible and will have a great time there, too. We had a hard time finding a place to stay in March, but the one we did find turned out to be a great option and in a place we'd never considered.
