Taiwan (Taipei, specifically) was luxurious, clean and modern, and lacked the raw energy of the people (and sunlight) that I found in the Philippines. We still had a grand ol' time there, though - and one of the best New Year's Eves I've had so far at the officiation of Taipei 101, although I thought I was going to freeze to death afterwards. Thankfully, I lived to tell the tale. :P
