If I'm just backpacking for six weeks, the "visa" that they stamp in my passport is enough, right? I don't need any other paperwork, do I?

well it depends on the country that you are visiting but for the majority of europe yes

Mostly Western Europe? (Pretty much limited to the 18 Eurail countries)
