transit Visa to cross Mongolia?

Hello all..
I was wondering if I wanna cross russia into china via mongolia.. do you need a transit visa?
Here in Mexico the is no mongolian representation (there is a telephone number that´s not working jeje) so if I just show at the border and ask for permission to cross their country... will that work?

Any one who has done this.. please inform!

I don't the specifics, but I'd definitely have a visa before you get there. I know Russia's one of the stricter countries. Get your visa by mail, it might take a while and cost a lot for insured postage, but it'll work. travel.state.gov can give you some information to start with, of course it's tailored to Americans, but it'll be helpful for you too. Are you starting this trip in Europe? You could always get it at a Russian embassy in another country.

If you can't get ahold of them in Mexico maybe you could call their representation in the USA and they could help you better?

well.. it seems its going to get a little difficult without any representation in Mexico.
Now, I assume anyone can ask for a visa even if there`s no embassy or representation in your origin country? but if so, has any of you done that? I think not since US and Uk have all embassies right?
So.. Russia and China can give me a visa, but if I want to cross Mongolia I`ll need to mail Washington DC ?? how does this sound to you? I`m kinda new in this visa-embassy-searching thing since all trips before were paperwork friendly...

I would call the embassy in Washington D.C., or maybe a consulate and ask them about the correct procedures. I've done several visa by international mail with no problems.

A friend of mine did the exact same trip you are planning. His favorite country was Mongolia -favorite among all 15 countries he visited in his life !- so I'd suggest you get a regular tourist visa instead of a transit. Just in case you also fall in love with the place...

You know I´ve been doing some research about Mongolia and in deed seems like a great -unknown- place. I will try to get the regular visa my concern now is trying to convince the guys in the russian, chinese and mongolian embassies about my travel plans with no plane tickets in&out of their land (its all by train)

Anyways I appreciate all for your help, oh and atchoum if there´s anything else you could think might help me for the trip please let me know, your friends advice would be just great since I feel very -disconnected- from these 3 places I wanna visit..

I've met a guy that took the train through those countries, he did it so there is a way. A pain in the ass it might be, all part of the fun, errr . . . something.

I think it's a pretty typical trip, so you shouldn't have problem to convince them. Unless they are in a bad mood...
