Wondering what is better to use in western Europe... I have used american express travelers cheks in Costa Rica and Japan and that shit was a fucking pain...only certain places will do it for u and then it was a hassle to get it exchanged...I have heard that ATMs give good exchange rates and i figure that is almost as safe as travelers checks...looking for some advice...muchos gracias

ATM's typically give out the best exchange rate available. you normally have to incur a small fee for using your atm card on a bank machine thats not your bank's but its minimal and typically is still a better deal than going to a currency exchange place. traveler's checks are always a pain. i cant think of one place where they are convienient to have. they really dont offer much of a safety advantage over ATM's either, since if either of them get stolen u can do something about getting yoru money back.
all in all i would avoid travelers checks if possible. they really seem to be phasing out. the only places that seem to accept them anymore are banks and classy hotels.

ATM without a doubt. Just take a bank card and a credit card and you will be covered for all of western europe....and most of the rest of the world, ATMs are extremely common in all parts these days.

just make sure you have a 4 digit pin. I like to have a traveller's cheque or two stashed away just in case something happens, but yeah there are atms everywhere.

I might keep some travelers cheques. Problem with ATM is if your card gets lost/stolen/destroyed you can cancel/order a new one but until it comes you can't take out any money. Same with cheques I guess?

I had my cheques insured. if they were stolen or whatever all I had to do was go to an american express office and get them replaced. my bank card and credit card would have taken much longer.
