I just cancelled a reservation at a hostel. The hostel wrote me that because I cancelled only the day after reserving that I can recover the deposit (which is the cost for the first night) but in order to do so I have to send them my bank account number. I'm a bit suspicious. It's not a shady establishment or anything (it's gotten positive reviews in several guidebooks and websites) but still ... What do you guys think?

How much was the deposit? I actually had to email a hostel my CC # (which I wasn't a fan of) but nothing shady happened. If it is only for a dollar or two, i would just suck up the loss.

I would be hesitant to send any credit card info also. In the past I have cancled hotel bookings at it only cost me about $3-5, so I just took the loss. Personally I think that the hastle to get a few bucks back is not worth it. If it's a bigger ammount then I guess it's a different story.

The deposit is more than a few dollars so i'm gonna go for it. And if there's any "unpleasantness" I'll be letting all of you know about it. But I doubt it.

Can you call and talk to them about it instead? Might be better than sending your info online. Maybe. *shrug*

How did you originally make the deposit? Presumably by CC?? If that is the case they DO NOT need your bank account info, they should just be able to credit your credit card.

There is a difference between bank account number and credit card number. Which do you really mean? You are protected from fraud with your credit card...so if they fradulently charge something, you can, with relative ease, get it cleaned up. I would be VERY hesitant to give anyone my bank account number, however, and I have never heard of anyone/business asking for a bank account number directly.

While the establishment itself may be reputable, a particular individual working in the establishment may not be. They may be using the opportunity to gather personal info such as this to try to rip people off. I am not trying to sound alarmist, but your bank details really need to stay private. Only use your CC.
