I was wondering if anyone here has used the WWOOF program (world wide opportunities on organic farms. It sounds pretty cool. You get a list of organic farmers in the countries you are interested and contact them and see if you can stay there and work a few hours a day for room and board. I would guess that this would not only cut down travel expenses, but fully immerse you in the culture. If anyone has used this program I would like to know if your experiences were positive.

I believe you have to pay to be a member, correct? You can set up work exchanges as a non WWOOF member for free via this site. Most of the places are organic farms and various other homesteads.
