I'm planning to take off on an extended trip to Europe next Fall. I know I'll be hitting England...what I want to know is, how possible is it to arrive in the Lake District and get a job to fund traveling? As hostels have limits on how long you can stay, and I don't know anyone I can crash with, I'm guessing I'd have to rent a room in an inn or some such place in order to stick around long enough in one place to keep a job...the kind of job I mean is waitressing, retail, etc., something unskilled to make $$. Would I come out on top if I was working but also paying for a room? Any suggestions beyond this on how to fund a Euro trip in some way other than just arriving with a lot of cash? Greatly appreciated!!!

Theres more experienced people who can give you advice in general about making money on a trip, but i can be a bit more specific to the lake district

it is an amazing part of the country, so picturesque and beautiful countryside. A lot of tourists, so i couldnt imagine finding waitressing jobs that difficult to find...BUT fall isnt really a time where there are a lot of tourists in the Lakes. I have been up to the lakes twice in October/november time in the last few years, and while you can still get some decent weather (but cold) there arent very many tourists around, so not sure if finding a job there would be very easy at that time of year.

having said that, no matter what time of year its been when I've gone, the traffic is always horrendous trying to leave on a sunday night!

Yes...the timing is something I'm wrestling with. I was planning for the Fall simply because I know tourism will have slowed down, but I suppose if I won't be able to get a job at that time of year, I'd better go earlier...?

You might also check out the Camping Barns run by HI. They only cost a few pounds a night and are in (apparently) really gorgeous areas. Add grocery store food and you'd at least be able to keep from starving while you searched for a job. I've never stayed in them myself, but I'm hoping to make use of them while I'm coast-to-coasting this summer. Anyone have firsthand experience?

Perhaps you could go a bit earlier than you planned, work for the last part of the tourist season, and then have a great time with the money you've managed to save?

The Lake District is so lovely, I love all the little coffee shops and stuff.
