So when I was planning my trip to europe last year, I heard that people will hire you to help on their boat in exchange for free passage for you to their destination. For example, crossing the atlantic... I have always had the dream of living on a sailboat and touring along the coast of the americas, but only have a moderate amount of experience, mostly on small daysailors. I thought this would be a great way to learn more about sailing and save me a wad of cash in airfare. It turned out that because I was leaving in the fall, most boats were on their way west, having crossed east in the spring. My girlfriend and I are now thinking about doing a crossing next spring, and I'm wondering if any of you have done it, either on a sailboat or a yacht. On a broader note, after looking around on the net a bit, there seemed to be boats going EVERYWHERE. Though I haven't done much looking yet for this trip, I thought others might be interested.

When I was down in baja I saw a lot of boards where people had posted open crew spots! It seems like it might be a bit hard to get into at first since everyone wants you to have experience.

Merci Beaucoup Benna. Jake, last time I was looking, there seemed to be a fair amount that didn't need any experience. When you have experience, then you actually can get PAID for the trip. That's the shit...

Yeah, Ive thought of doing this too. Ive never done it myself but Ive heard from others that in Europe you can often just go down to the marina and hang out or ask around and find people willing to let you cew with them.

Yeah...I'm not sure it's as easy as that. Well, maybe if you get lucky. I tried that in Palma, on the island of Mallorca, off of Spain. I couldn't even get onto the damned dock without a pass. Maybe other places it would be easier.
